How Many Aircraft In American West Old Colors?

Mon May 28, 2007 12:55 pm

I'm looking to make a trip to Phoenix or Las Vegas, I'm wondering how many aircraft are still in American West colors and what types? Also where they generally go and where the best place is to see them? Thanks...

Not too many... I'm fairly certain all the A319s are repainted (although you might be lucky and get a retro scheme). There's still a few A320s out there in old colors, and I don't recall seeing an old c/s 733 in weeks.

And, IIRC, 901 is the only 757 not in the US colors, but they might have shipped that one to ROW (or MCN... I forget where they do the 752s).

But PHX is probably the best place (most flights) to spot, followed by LAS. Every single AWA aircraft passes thru one of those two hubs.

I was watching planes in Concourse D at PHX for about 2 hours on Tuesday (fantastic spotting location with the huge windows overlooking the runway!), and did not see one single mainline aircraft still in the America West livery. The only HP liveries I saw were on the RJs. I did, however, see the America West retro livery at DEN while taxiing out for my flight to PHX!

Not to be a pain, but it's America West. Can we maybe fix the thread title?

To answer your question:

A319 - All in new colors.
A320 - About 10 still in HP colors. A/C 631 is in MIA being painted.
737 - 1 and it's in maintenance in MCN. It will come out in new colors.
757 - 1 a/c 901 which wears the AZ colors.

There are no aircraft out at ROW for repaint and not expected to be until the fall schedule.

914 was the last one left in the O/C and it came out of ROW about a month ago. No more A319s, no more 752s. I'll take a guess that 5-8 A320's are left to be sprayed. I can't speak for sure for 733s but I would guess 3-5 left.

When will she be repainted? It is in HNL today and will be leaving for PHX in about an hour.

I've heard the fall. So for the summer there are two Arizona airplanes (1.) Boeing 757 N901AW and (2.) Airbus A319 N826AW.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who this bugs. I've never understood why so many people call it AmericaN West...
