Unusual Activity At Chicago

Thu May 31, 2007 3:15 am

This morning I headed for Navy Pier in Chicago. I made it to the end of the pier about 8:15. While sitting taking in the lake breeze I noticed some strange activity regarding airliners presumably bound for O'Hare. Quite often flights from the east and south will skirt the southern end of Lake Michigan before turning north. They follow the lakeshore until Lincoln Park before turning northwest to land on 32L or past Lincoln Park before turning west to land on the 27s. However today I noted more than a dozen flights make the turn north right around the extreme southeastern part of the city and then right about when they were in line with the Loop, they turned back east over Lake Michigan eventually disappearing from view. These were not flights heading east out of Midway. Those planes were considerably lower in altitude than the ones I'm referring to. I saw several MD80s, A320s, A319s, B737s, and a B757. Does anyone know what was going on?

I have flown that departure from MDW many times, once MDW-SNN ferrying a 752. I saw my apartment complex, plus the ride up the lake shore is awesome. I didn't get to ride in the flight deck too often, so it was a treat.

The MD-80s kind of blow the departure [from MDW] theory too. Maybe they are flying that approach to ORD and heading out over the lake for some spacing/timing issues?
