When Will The AA 738s Come To BOS?

Thu May 31, 2007 10:33 am

After working at BOS for about three months now I'm beginning to grow bored with the endless 752, MD-82, MD-83 parade over at the AA ramp and I'm curious to know when American will start sending some 738s our way. Will AA wait until the MD-80s start to get retired, or is it possible that we might see some earlier than that? And as a side note, are there any updates on the 738 order schedule?

When AA aligned their fleet a few years back (so that ORD didn't get 737-800s, MIA didn't get MD-80s, etc.), BOS lost the 737-800s and A300s. As such, all former 737-800 routes are now either 757s (pretty much transcons) or MD-80s (ORD/DFW). A300s which appeared on the MIA and SJU routes are now 757s.

You're going to be bored for a very long time if a 737 is really what it takes to cure your boredom. American pulled 738's from BOS, and I believe ORD as they pulled MD8's from MIA. It was a matter of fleet simplification to cut costs. By the way, there have been like ten posts on the subject, it's nothing new. I'm surprised nobody at work informed you of the situation.

I thought AA was using 738's on the BOS-SAN route? Well I am looking at AA.com and it looks like they upgraded it to a 757.

Anyways, how does this save costs? As pilots gain seniority, they will want to change domiciles, which means you are doing type training a lot more often than you would otherwise. Additionally, this isolates ORD from MIA in a way, which I don't know if its healthy. This looks good on paper, but I just don't see the cost savings.

LOL. Upgrade? Compare an AA 738 and an AA 757. That is a downgrade.

Its mainly for maintenance, AFAIK. For example, now MIA doesn't have to keep maintenance tools and parts for the MD-80 as well as the B737.

It reduces costs by not having to stock stations with maintenance/operating equipment for multiple aircraft. It also simplifies scheduling.

Isolating O'Hare isn't just a Miami issue, it's a system wide issue. O'Hare is hell in the summer when it comes to flight cancellations and the ripple effect that it causes. If you isolate aircraft to O'Hare routes, the ripples are limited to O'Hare and the spoke city.

LOL! I agree with you MAH4546! You say it the way you see it and even though the 752s are larger than the 738s, I think it's a downgrade too, having to flying on those old beat up cramped and uncomfortable metal tubes. 738s would be an upgrade, not a 752s.

I should have titled the thread "When will the AA 738s return to BOS?" as I did know that the type used to be flown into BOS, my mistake for the confusion in that.

I appreciate all the replies but, does anyone know when they will be back?

Unless it's a sub for a Transcon(BOS-LAX-BOS), like everyone else has posted, it's going to be a while. The majority of AA's 738 fleet was shifted to MIA a few years ago, to compete on the long and thin carribean routes that really couldn't support the A300 or 752.
If your really jonesing for some 738's check out Terminal A. DL runs several a day out of BOS including LAX.  Smile

Eh, it's not so much that I'm overly interested in the 738, just tired of the MD-80s and 752s. And actually, I should clarify that statement before I have everyone jumping all over me; I love both the MD-80 and the 752, they're just so damn loud that it makes it annoying to be out on the ramp during the busy times. It's amazing how much quieter the newer types are; the CO 737s, 738s, 739s and B6 A320s, E190s are so much easier on the ears than the MD-80s, 752s and older CO 737 types. The most annoying ones by far though, are the CommuteAir 1900Ds!

I digress though, and as Luv2Fly as pointed out, you all seem to be sick of this topic. Thanks for the help though!

Not sick of the topic- I'm in BOS every couple of weeks, and I miss seeing the A300's bound for SJU, the trans-con 762' s and the 738s at AA's pier. If I happen to be there latter in the day, I'll stumble accross an occasional trans-atlantic 763 and scads of 777's. Not the same as it used to be. All the piers at BOS are in a similar situation, not just AA. DL and UA's terminals are prime examples of schedule changes and cutbacks from just a few years ago. I feel your pain, just alot of threads on this topic.  Smile

The 777s are here a few times a day (early morning and early evening) and the 763s are here in the evening during the summer. I love seeing those 763s, we don't get many 767s here at BOS since 9/11 so they're a welcome sight. Most of the time AA parks them over on the right side of their pier near the Eagle ramp but, every once in a while they'll park them on the left side next to the 777 (which is nice because it's right across from our ramp here at 9K). It's cool when they have the 772, 763 and 752 parked right in a row, gives you a great size comparison! The 752s look pretty big until you toss a 772 next to them!

That flight never came back when AA stopped Haiti service after the most recent uprising, it was supposed to return December 16, 2004.

And even then, it was never an A300. Always a 738 or 752.

How many 752's Trans-Atlantic will AA run this summer besides MAN out of BOS? I haven't been keeping up this season.  Embarrassment
