Is There A Crew Base At Bristol? (BRS)

Thu May 31, 2007 9:41 pm

Hey Guys!

Hopefully some of you will be able to help me out. I'm currently living in the States but will likely be returning to the UK next month, after 9 years here. I'll be moving back to Bristol to start a new life in the UK, this will obviously include me needing to get a job! I was wondering what airlines (if any) have crews based at BRS? If there are, do they have certain times of year that they hire, or do they have some sort of continuous hiring? I was also wondering if ground crew are airline employees or contracted through a handling company? And lastly, I have no idea as to what qualifications are needed to become an F/A in the UK, I did most of my secondary education in the States, and have some college experience but have been unable to complete it due to the fact I have to return to the UK.

Any and all information would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

easyJet has a crew base in BRS since a long time, and Ryanair will start one in November. Both airlines are very actively recruiting cabin crew and you could defenitely give it a try.

Surely fellow A.netters who are employed at either carrier can tell you more about the working conditions, etc.

Also:

First Choice Airways - charter airline
MyTravel Airways - charter airline (summer only)
XL Airways - charter airline

And maybe Air Southwest, a regional airline

Thanks guys, it's been a while since I've been more than a year since I've been back to BRS and wasn't sure what was still there. Have Flybe completely ceased ops from there now? Also, I know you probably need some sort of GCSE qualification, but what would that translate to in terms of U.S. educational equivalent? I've done all my education in the States, and I don't know really how that would work in the UK.

I think they did have when they ran the Norwich flights, but since that went, the aircraft are just based at PLH and NQY - I think. They are making some changes, the flying day is being extended on the PLH based flights, but as it still returns twice a day they make a crew swap there. Now that BA have gone they may think about starting up some routes from Bristol though, the Dash 8-300 could be the right sized aircraft to capture niche markets.

I know BE no longer have a base at BRS but EXT is not far away and they are recruiting there. They seem to be pretty flexible with educational qualification's, just basic maths and english. Here are their requirements taken from their website:

To become a member of Flybe Cabin Crew, you need to be minimum height 5ft 2in (157cm), maximum 6ft 2in (188cm) and weight must be in proportion to height with the ability to wear the company uniform to standard.

You must have at least three GCSEs Grade C (or equivalent) or above, including English and Mathematics.

A minimum of 12 months experience in a customer/sales/service environment is preferred. You must be in possession of a full, valid EU passport or ID with no restrictions and any non-EU passport holders must me in possession of a valid work permit and/or Visa which must allow entry to any Flybe destination. Applications will only be considered from applicants who meet all our criteria. A full and valid driving licence is essential.

If you can offer all of these qualities together with bags of enthusiasm, we can offer you a competitive salary package that includes full uniform and allowances plus commission on sales. We will also provide accommodation whilst training.

After six months, you will be eligible for reduced rate travel to destinations worldwide.

Right size, but would business passengers want to be stuck on a turboprop to Munich, Zurich, Frankfurt or Dusseldorf? (these routes being the ex BA Connect ones that have not yet been replaced)

Perhaps they won't like it too much, but what's the choice? I think many passengers rather take a turboprop flight from their small local airport, than drive whole the way to Heathrow and enjoy the LHR-experience before taking a jet.

Besides that, coverage to Germany from that part of England is very limited anyways.

I used to be based there, a great bunch of people  Smile They were not recruiting this year, I've been trying to get back in since leaving nearly 2 years ago.

I asked Air Southwest about three months ago, they don't have a crew base at BRS at the minute.

Since Flybe/BA pulled out I would expect tough competition to get a job, but then again I've been with qualified crews who have been passed over for people with no experience, just depends on the day I guess  Smile

Oh, Air Malta had a base there in 2005, maybe last year too? They have been operating charter flights from all over the UK over the past few years, they might be hiring, which reminds me...........
