Direct (Not Via IST) Flights LON-ECN?

Fri Jun 01, 2007 6:41 pm

...is this likely to happen within a couple of years? Any possibility for LON-NIC flights.

Would BA stick with LCA, opening possibilities for GT?

This all depends on the political situation on the whole Island and between the two communities. Whilst there are always rumours about direct flights from time to time in theory it will not happen anytime fast. There are alot of issues to be resolved before this happens. As for NIC this is less likely and has been discussed as a joint airport for Greek and Turkish sides but who would run it and would it be wise to have Greek troops on one side of the air field and Turkish on the other side !!! There is just too much to happen before any of this could be considered. IN the meantime everything stays at the satus quo unfortunatly.

Any flights that leave a non-Turkish airport MUST touch down on Turkish soil first before it can continue to ECN. I would love to see a direct flight from the UK, but at this moment in time, we´ll have to make do going via Turkish mainland.

Do any of the current flights go via IST or do they all go via coastal airports such as AYT and DLM?

Any aircraft have to touch down in Turkey first because Ercan Airport is not internationally recognized as a legal port of entry except by Turkey. Thus according to international law any entry there is considered an illegal entry into its territory by the Republic of Cyprus. Greek and Cypriot authorities may deny anyone entry into either country if he/she has entered Northern Cyprus by a non-recognized airport. However I think the Turkish authorities get round this by the detachable page they put in your passport upon entry to Turkey.

I do hope the situation improves but I dont see it in the immediate future.

That used to be the case but not anymore. If a foreign tourist comes to LCA or PFO with a ''KKTC'' stamp in their passport the Greek Cypriot authorities just cancel the stamp and you get a frown LOL....
