DL Overbooking Help PLZ

Sat Jun 02, 2007 1:35 am

Flying SEA-SJU-SEA on DL 1st week of July.

The SEA-ATL-SEA portions look good, but the ATL-SJU-ATL flights are pretty full.

Considering I am connecting in ATL to SEA on the way home......

#1 Will DL fill F class before bumping?

#2 If I vounlteer to get bumped, and I am on the last SJU-ATL flight that night, what happens?

#3 What type on compensation is DL giving these days?

Thanks, Alex

I don't know what will exactly happen, but I do know they would be making announcements asking for volunteers due to a possible oversell. In that announcement they should tell you exactly what compensation you'd be given and when the next flight to your destination would be. If you identified yourself as a volunteer to a gate agent - at that point you should ask them about your connection to SEA and how you will get there if you do not take this flight.Showing interest in volunteering doesn't actually mean you are volunteering so you will be able to get all of your questions answered before making that decision.
Prepare doors for departure and cross-check.

Depending of stage length, it's usually 200 or 400 Delta Dollars. As for overbookings, they'll just re-book you on the next flight. Should be no big deal. If it works out, you can get a confirmed seat on the next flight and get money towards your next trip in the process, although you'll have to spend a few extra hours in SJU. As for filling up F, on international routes DL doesn't allow upgrades, at least that's what I was told, so I don't know how that gets handled.

So if the next flight is the next morning, am I on my own for a hotel stay or does DL take care of that as well?

Thanks for the help so far!!!

I have been upgraded on a Delta international flight. It was Dec. '06, so I do not know if the rules have changed in the last 6 months.

(1) SJU-ATL isn't international.
(2) Delta does offer complimentary upgrades for Medallions on flights to & from the Caribbean (and BDA), Mexico, Central & non-deep South America (i.e. not EZE, GRU, GIG, SCL), and Canada. Chances are that there will be enough Medallions on the flight that F will fill up with upgrades, if there are any seats available.

Yikes...thanks for the help  footinmouth  As for number two, one of my coworkers told me that DL doesn't offer free upgrades on international flights, but didn't mention anything about Caribbean routes. Thanks for clearing that up for me, I didn't mean to spread false info. Thanks for setting me straight, though.  Wink

I have been upgraded on a Delta international flight

To clarify: DL does not give free upgrades to Medallions for international flights, so unlike on domestic flights where F is nearly always filled by status upgrades, it's very possible to have a full or oversold Y cabin with empty seats in F. Of course operational upgrades are always a possibility if Y checks in more than 100% and there are open seats in F. These would be given out based on elite status and price/fare class of ticket. Only after both cabins are filled and if there are still more passengers than seats would they start asking for volunteers.

Well, this statement is MOSTLY wrong... medallions get free unlimited upgrades on ANY fare to all international destinations not served by Business Elite service... the free upgrades include everything in South America except for SCL, GRU, GIG and EZE. It includes all of Central America, the Caribbean, Mexico and Canada as well as BDA.

Yes, DL will fill F up first before bumping. Medallions on revenue tickets get first cracks (as per the published Medallion upgrade rules). From there, it's my understanding in talking to some DL agents that the next in line would be either SkyTeam elites on revenue tickets or Medallions on award tickets, and then they'll bump up any non-status passenger after that. The only way they bump is if every single seat on the plane is occupied.

While I haven't been bumped overnight for about a year now, when I last was a year ago in ATL, DL put us up in a hotel overnight - they gave us a voucher, when I checked in there, I just gave them the voucher and got my key.

My bump last month (on a GSO-CVG flight) resulted in me getting a $200 voucher, confirmed F on GSO-ATL, and confirmed Y (full Y ticket) on ATL-LAS (F was sold out, but with the full-Y ticket, it bumped me up to number one on the upgrade list and I cleared the upgrade at the gate). My impressions are that if it's an overnight bump it's $400; if it's on a 50-seat RJ or less, you can only get $200 (as per DL's Contract of Carriage, page 52). I don't know if after a certain point (say being delayed over 4 hours) the amount goes up to $400.
