Health Insurance Requirements To Travel

Sun Jun 03, 2007 12:44 am

Hello everyone!

I am flying to my home country of Latvia this summer, haven't been there for 4 years. The last time I went the only document I needed was my US Passport. Nowadays every website I check seems to mention health insurance as a requirement to enter Latvia and some websites even mention that the border guards check in upon entry. Does anyone know if this is true or not? It hasn't been the case the last time I went there which was in 2003.

I looked on Skyteam web site where they have a section about visa requirements (you choose your country of nationality and eventually country for connection). Here what it says (below) and the health insurance is needed. BUt they say you can take one at the airport on arrival before clearing immigration

National U.S.A. (US) /Embarkation U.S.A. (US)
Destination LATVIA (LV)

LATVIA (LV)
Passport (must be valid at least 3 months beyond period of
intended stay) required.

Visa not required for a stay of generally max. 90 days per
half calendar year.

Passenger must hold health and life insurance policy that
guarantees covering health care expenses in Latvia, including
the return to the host country in case of severe illness or
death.
It is possible to obtain policy before Immigration control on
arrival at Riga International airport.

Is this true of many countries? Or is Latvia somewhat unique in this?

Don't know for sure but in Europe, I think it's quite unique.
I know also it's the case for Russia as it's one of the item to provide for the visa demand
