BHX News 2007

Sun Jun 03, 2007 9:47 pm

Hi everyone,
I thought that as BHX is my local airport i will start a new thread containing all recent BHX news, over the last few weeks and months these new services have started:

- Aer arran started a 6 times weekly ATR-72 flight from Waterford.
- BMI are basing an Airbus A320 at weekends to operate charter flights.
- Balkan Holidays has returned only with a once weekly A320 flight.
- Norwegian have started a four times weekly service from Warsaw using 733.
- European aircharter have returned with a once weekly 732 Faro service.
- Flyglobespan have started a new Toronto Hamilton service
- Adria have returned from Ljubljana with a mix of aircraft
- Whoosh have started with a twice daily dundee service using ATR-42.
- KTHY have started a once weekly service with 737-800

Ryanair have recently announced a new 6 weekly Shannon service from November but that shocked me as they pulled their Gerona and Murcia routes from BHX in 2004 over landing fees.

All this is good news for BHX and if there is anything i have missed please feel free to add it.

One offs in June 2007 include

- VLM from Rotterdam on 5th.
- Titan airways from STN on 8th
- Croatian from SPU on 14th and 21st
- Transavia from AMS on 16th and 18th
- Cirrus from doncaster on 19th and Lyon on 21st
- Airlinair from CDG on 21st
- Corsair 744 from BSL on 22nd
- Hello from ZRH on 23rd
- Blue line from Dole on 23rd
- Corsair A330 from BSL on 24th

Oh yes, i forgot the Air Transat from Toronto twice a week using A310.

If anyone has any further news about BHX please mention it on here, also how do you think these new services will do and do you think they are sustainable?

Does anyone know of a British Airways diversion to BHX today? The callsign was Speedbird 614 and there is no BA flight of 614 (and no BA flights to BHX which is why I made sure that was the callsign a few times on my scanner before posting!!) could it of been using a reserved flight number for a medical diversion or some other diversion?

What time was the diversion?

Thats the thing, I dont know if it was a diversion, thats what I'm trying to ascertain.

It was before the Continental went at 09:10 so it was pretty early between 08:00 and 09:00

I remember either the Captain or First Officer thanking BHX 'for all their help' as it departed.

When did FR operate anything else other than DUB ??
I didnt thik they had any other services than that .. ??
Hasnt SN also upgraded the aircraft they use their now also ??
Any news on NW/AA/DL yet ??

Have heard from various people that DL/AA are interested in JFK and NW in DTW....

NW is obviously wishful thinking for me..

One of my friends whos a business development manager at BHX said they had been in talks with NW but havent asked her recently how they have got on...

Hi, Ryanair did operate flights using 737-200 to Gerona and Murcia for about 6 months up until April 2004.
Yes SN has upgraded three of the 6 daily flights to 737-300/400.
Also it would be interesting if these rumours about NW/AA/DL were to come true, would be nice to see another US airline at BHX

I still think Continental have it tied up at BHX though. They have become so complacent that I dont even think they are bothering with the 2nd daily EWR service now this year (reduced it to 3 times a week last year from every day and then only in the summer months instead of being year round)

Much as I'd like to see AA / UA back etc to give me a choice (I either go to Newark at 9 am every day from my local airport or I dont go to the US at all unless I go to MAN or LHR) I cant see any other US carrier back at BHX any time soon which is a shame.

Lentini,

Got to agree with you, CO make a killing from BHX and in all fairness are very protective of it, whenever other airlines come sniffing they announce they're going double daily and then revert back when the potential competition is put off. I still think our best bet is the return of AA if the new owners can attract them?

On a different subject I understand security at BHX is the subject of tomorrow 'tonight with Trevor MacDonald' on ITV, quite worrying as the head os US homeland security is calling for the CO service to be grounded until the problems are sorted.....

While any new routes are good, nearly all of them are charter flights for tour operators, or at least seasonal flights that fit in with holidays. Without the tour operators these flights probably wouldn't happen.

The only true new routes are Warsaw, Dundee, Waterford and Lyon (which is an old BAcon route) I think Warsaw will prove be be a winner if marketed correctly, just surprised it had to be norweigan, should have been bmibaby really. Not sure about Dundee, interesting, but uncharted territory really. Waterford will probably do ok, most Ireland-BHX flights do.

Any truth in the rumour that flyglobespan are going to base 2 737s at BHX for the usual Spanish routes?

The Europeanair to Faro seems to have been withdrawn, it was sold by AVRO/Cosmos and they have just dropped everybody on the the Monarch service ( what a suprise)

I have a feeling it's more fundamental than that. More than enough profit can be made with a single daily BUT as soon as extra capacity (in the form of addtional frequencies) in introduced, perhaps not enough premium passengers are attracted to it for it be profitable for them.

Well, reading on another "rumour" based website, it seems it only gets worse. Apparently there was an incident concerning the visiting Corsair 747 over the weekend. Overnight it seems someone enetered the aircraft, the crew returned the next day to find the door seals broken and some tampering inside the aircraft.

It comes to something when an airline can't leave an aircraft overnight. And to think BIA and ICTS know about the TV programme tomorrow and are saying investigations are in place and security is not an issue....

For years there have been rumours of another Middle Eastern carrier flying from BHX.

I do remember when Gulf Traveller (low cost subsidary or Gulf Air) annouced a new service to BAH and AUH, but neither of these have materialised. But I have heard people suggesting Qatar and Etihad would be interested in flying from the airport.

Im not sure if their would be much demand as Emirates successfully operate a twice daily service with a 777-200 and A330-200. This has on occassions been 777-300's operating the route.

I agree the likelihood of another US carrier operating from the airport is unlikely. With London only being down the road, many people would rather take the trip down the M40 and get on a direct flght. Also BHX's catchment areas overlap with the London airports and Manchester for people living north and south of the city. Also airlines like SilverJet are probably attracting some premium traffic on the NYC route away from BHX to LTN for businessmen living in the South Midlands.

I can't believe BHX got overtaken by Luton earlier this year with higher passenger numbers, and hope they manage to turn around their downturn in passenger numbers which they have been reporting for the last year or so.

Have those dodgy people from nearby Chelmsley Wood been braking into the airport again?  Wink

I remember when I worked at the airport, I met a chap from GF, he said that they had been looking at BHX but then EK got in there first and well.... that was that...

So I guess they tried to give GTrav ago but that didnt materialise either... shame really as im sure it would have been quite succesfull as a lower cost model... theres quite a few pax that would like to trav to AUH/DXB for cheaper than EK's fares.. or even for connecting flights off to the far east... a lot of backpackers would go for that..

Im sure a new american carrier will come back to the airport.. I wouldnt expect anything larger than a 757 route... after all BHX is rather a thin destinations for longer haul routes that way.. best bet would be NW...or even UA..not that UA are sending 757's accross the atlantic..but a daily 757 flight to ORD would actually work Id imagine..one for AA I guess.

I know a lot of my clients alone who travel to DTW/ORD and have to travel down to London first, they are not neccessarily flying just point to point.. a lot of clients I deal with fly to places like peoria, IL or other cities within the Indiana, Ohio, Michigan area... Im sure Im not the only agent that sells a lot of seats that way from the midlands.

In my opinion, the airport should concentrate on generating new services that have not historically been served... flights to VCE, OSL, IST would be winners in my opinion... even if they are low cost routes by WW or even attracting U2..

The initiating of LIS by WW in my opinion should be a winner once people are aware of it.. I think WW should actually target the business travellers more..they have a golden opportunity with the withdrawl of Bacon... even if BE took over some of the routes... they operate a lot of routes that business travellers use and these travellers, although cost conscious, are looking for quickness and would rather fly locally than travel up to MAN or down to LHR.

So... thats my opinion regarding BHX..

Any idea if PK will be pulling any flights or upgrading to 777's ?

And regarding this whole corsair issue... there must be a logical explaination... I mean... it doesnt make sense... why would anyone want to break seals on the door and 'tamper' with the interior ?? whatever that means ??
I imagine it could have been a wreckless dispatcher or ramp agent, maybe the dispatcher forgot something onboard and went back after it was all locked up.. unlikely but possible..
Maybe some cleaners ?? I very much doubt it would have been anyone other than airport staff ... if it was parked off stand, I couldnt see how someone would have managed to get all th way over to it just to tamper with the interior..
hahaha... ok thats just my reasonings...  Wink

Dont think you'll even see a hole being dug to begin the runway extension before 2010. Thats just my guesstimate - I dont have any further info.

Regarding that though, even if they did extend it by another 1000 feet, I cant see any airline anytime soon thinking - great we can reach LA or Hong Kong from BHX now, there just isn't the number of people there and like its been said before, its too close to MAN and LHR.

Just my opinion - and its my local airport and I wish it would have a few more trans-Atlantic destination choices as I mentioned above.

Got it in one. Some days both flights were full, but most days the first flight left with maybe 60% load, and the second left with about 30%.

I guess they're aiming at the business market, in all fairness there were cheaper fares around but picking a random date in October returned that fair 1 way, the average appeared to be around the £150 mark.

FlyGlobespan are apparently basing 2 aircraft at BHX from the winter season to the usual holiday routes, Faro, Malaga etc. Strange time of year to be launching new flights, especially when Monarch and Baby are established on them.

Forgot to mention in the last post, an article in todays Bham Post about a new low cost long haul carrier caller Air Shylet looking to start services to Delhi, Islamabad and Mumbai amongst others from Brum, Stansted and MAN. Another article in post suggests a thaw in the relationship with Ryanair, a great quote from the FR spokesperson about BHX being in a time of reflection following the withdrawl of BA, as of course predicted by Mr O'Leary not so long back.

I think its a case of reduced winter demand on GLA, EDI and MME, with those airports having less aircraft based. So they need to go somewhere, and that could be BHX. Then when GSM get more aircraft next summer they can maintain any new bases as well as increase EDI/GLA/MME again

frankly the possibility of a globespan flight programme fills me with horror. i have a soft feeling for them BUT this summer has been a total disaster. I would not have the confidence to book them and so we shall see.
As a note on the TV programme I do not think anyone will fly BHX on CO if they saw it as the security was a total disaster

I used to work at BHX... unfortunatley I didnt see the show.. (if anyone knows a link where I can see it online Id appreciate it)
I heard that it covered a lot on ICTS ?
Well, back in say 2002.. when I last worked there.. security was a joke back then..mostly young kids laughing and fooling around... I used to sit on CO check in and it amazed me that some were more interested in chatting up the check in girls !!
its soooo sad... I really wish we could see some major development at BHX... take some traffic from MAN... but with stupid issues like this, its no wonder why we are not attracting the airlines..

I think it was nearly impossible for BHX and MAN to secure Ryanair or easyJet a few years ago. Not so long ago, BA was ordering Airbus 318s for their regional bases, and promising MAN (and I assume BHX) a tripling of passenger numbers, so......that was that. I'm not so sure that BHX management is entirely to blame for the current situation with passenger numbers, and sometimes Ryanair arrogance is just a little unhelpful.

I too know someone who worked for ICTS back in 1999 to 2001 at BHX. He said they were an absolute joke but cant say more about certain things on here for fear of slander allegations etc.

That programme was shocking, and really scary. To say we are supposed to be fighting a war on terro, first we need to fight the war on some quite frankly abismal staff. I know not all are like that, but those ICTS guys were appalling. Did you see the guy boasting how he had been in prison for armed robbery, yet he was in charge of the CO flight's security

Unbelieveable

I doubt that will happen especially now that BRU will be thier mini-hub for flights to north america. I think 9W will only concentrate on LHR in the UK and might codeshare with SN Brussels airlines to other destinations in the UK  Smile

I asked once before, but no one replied, does anyone know how AI is doing at BHX (loads, cargo etc.)?? What is the arrival and departure times from BHX to and from YYZ and ATQ?? Thanks again.

In April, AI carried 3393 passengers between BHX and DEL (and ATQ too, although the CAA website doesn't list how many travel to either). It doesn't say much about how well they're doing, but I'd guess they're doing very well, because the Indian community in the East and West Midlands is certainly big enough.
