This should be great for the Star Alliance. They have very little presence in East Africa, and they will be able link Africa with Asia. ET has a great network from West Africa to Asia.

Ethiopia is a bit close to Egypt. I wonder how will this be settled if Egypt Air is moving to Star as they claimed?

Granted, MS has a great network between Europe and CAI, but ET's network is much stronger in Africa. The last few years ET has greatly improved their amazing hub at Addis, and serves far more points in Africa than MS.

Great news if true - Ethiopian's reputation is quite excellent -good food service and they even serve wine and spirits ..

So if you count a more recent code-share agreement between LH and Tunisair, the African map for STAR is getting more and more interesting !

hopefully this will lead to something bigger . SA are a great airline but while JNB may be the business centre of Africa it is not well positioned geographically as a hub - if ET eventually end up in Star it will certainly give Star fantastic coverage within Africa

ET flat out owns MS in Africa, here are their respective African networks:

Ethiopian Airlines
Abidjan, Accra, Addis Ababa, Bamako, Brazzaville, Bujumbura, Cairo, Dakar, Dar es Salaam, Djibouti, Douala, Entebbe, Hargeisa, Harare, Johannesburg, Juba, Khartoum, Kigali, Kilimanjaro, Kinshasa, Lagos, Libreville, Lilongwe, Lome, Luanda, Lusaka, N'Djamena and Nairobi.

Egypt Air
Accra, Addis Ababa, Algiers, Asmera, Benghazi, Cairo, Casablanca, Entebbe, Johannesburg, Kano, Lagos, Nairobi, Tripoli and Tunis

Although MS recently upgauged Tripoli to x13weeklies, Khartoum to x2daily, Johannesburg to x7daily, Lagos to x5weekly and Kano to x4 weekly. Also, Lusaka is supposed to come online before 2010.

Yea, ET is what we could call an economic wonder in Ethiopia. A good part of the whole Economy is focused off the airline, its amazing that theres such a strong airline from that part of the world.
Last flights: LH 3738 MUC - ZRH , LH 3749 ZRH - MUC . Upcoming: EK 50 MUC - DXB 3-aug. and EK 322 DXB - ICN 7- Aug.

amazing indeed, and ive heard theyre one of the better airlines in the world, leaps and bounds ahead that mainline US carriers, and they network is expansive as MD90fan pointed out, something great to see and be proud of in addition to their modern facilities at ADD.

also on another note... who about 25 years ago when u told them.. there would be nonstops from Ethiopia to many places in the world... theyd think you were crazy... i also think the same goes for Dubai... since Emirates has only been around since 1985.. prior that .... mainly EU or Asian Airlines were serving to Dubai.. if any..... times change...

Absolutely, if you tell anyone who is not familiar with aviation news that Ethiopia has an airline which has better ratings that most American legacy carriers? Ethiopian is really a proud representation of Ethiopia, and i keep on telling my friend that even tho he has no interest in aviation, hehe. Dubai is something that wasnt as expected, and soon theyre about to become the largest long-haul carrier in the world, simply amazing.

ET and SAA in Star would be fantastic assuming it happens.

Could this codeshare give LH the possibility of starting a partnership similar to what KL has with KQ, something that led to KQ becoming an asociate member in SkyTeam? If yes, then it wouldn't surprise me if ET does eventually make the jump into Star Alliance.
