VS MRU Service

Mon Jun 04, 2007 11:03 pm

Just seen on VS website that they will fly to MRU out of LHR not LGW

"Please be advised that Mauritius services will change port of origin from Gatwick to Heathrow in time for services commencing on 28th October 2007.

Passengers booked on Monday VS372 services ex LGW will be reprotected on the Sunday VS372 ex LHR.

Passengers booked on Friday VS372 services ex LGW will be reprotected on the same day's flight from LHR.

Passengers booked on Tuesday VS373 services ex MRU will be reprotected on Monday VS373 services and will arrive in LHR instead of LGW.

Passengers booked on Saturday VS373 services ex MRU will arrive in LHR instead of LGW. "

Sweet!

great to hear another VS 744 flight from LHR Big grin

BTW I guess they decided to use premium configured planes for the flight?

So it is no longer a LGW config 744 but now a LHR config plane?

Afraid not. The flight will now be operated by an A343, with the exception of the inaugural services which will be A346.

Why is first service always an A346?

Because it's the newest, glitziest plane with new Premium seats, new Economy seats and V:Port

Not always.

An inaugural is almost entirely filled with press, airline execs and various CIP's. therefore the aircraft with the highest density upper and premium configuration is used.

On plenty of occasions a 44J configured B744 has also been used for inaugurals - most recently MBJ, HAV and some others that will subsequently revert to a higher density, leisure configured B744.

Not all Brits are Riff Raff. The flight is going from Heathrow, not Chavwick! LOL

I think its quite interesting that they have moved the flight to Heathrow...compete more effectively with the BA service?

Because as usual, it is all about PR with Virgin... And for the TV cameras, they want the newest plane going... For all the media/press onboard, they don't want a tired old A340-300 with old seats and entertainment system.

Of course what the passengers get for real past that inaugural date is of very little concern to Mr Branson. As long as he gets to go on that Wing with a couple of birds wearing something local that gets him in the papers, that's all that matters!

Ah... The wonderful world of Virgin Atlantic.

Actually By the time the MRU service commences the A343 will have IDENTICAL J and W seats to an A346 (most already do) and in many ways the A343 actually has a preferrable economy cabin.

Granted the IFE system is inferior to an A346. What is always conveniently overlooked is that it is still comparable or superior to anything offerred by the competition.

As I mentioned earlier it has more to do with configuration than how good the aircraft looks in photos. Outside of Airliners.net how many people do you think would actually know the difference between an A343 and an A346?. fewer still would actually know which was the nicer aircraft - to many an A343 is considered more aesthetically pleasing than an A346.

VS start most of their routes with an A343 for the simple reason that they are currently the smallest aircraft in the fleet. Once the route has gained a foothold in the market it will be upgraded to an A346.

Of course an airline would want it's newest aircraft type flying on it inaugural service, not just VS and SRB I'm sure. Added to that, VS is doing what is necessary to address any issues like this by purchasing the 787 to replace the A343. If anybody has got a real problem with VS still flying the A343's that they have, you have two options, either call SRB and tell him to dig into his own pockets to completely refurbish the A343's which are going to be replaced in 4 years, or call Boeing and ask then if they could please hurry up and build the 789 for us.

Although the A343's are getting on in age, with the introduction of the new Premium Economy seat, this aircraft still offers everything that any other airline flying this route offers. As a Passenger, I would rather fly on the A343 to MRU than the LGW 744 as I'm guaranteed the new W seat and the Odyssey entertainment system, which is alot better than the NOVA system on 5 out of 8 aircraft at LGW. So the passengers are still getting a good deal even though it's not an A346.

But you never know, if the MRU service is as popular as VS hopes and predicts it will be, you may see the A346 flying the route in the not too distant future. Fingers crossed.
