It's really breaking news, just annouced today by upper management. Call Era Reservations to verify I guess.

Do they have a noncompete with Alaska?

I can make an educated guess at their reasoning for this:

Currently, Era passengers (as well as Penair and Frontier Flying) aren't subject to TSA security regulations. You check in and get on, that's it.

But, if somebody wanted to fly, for example, ENA-ANC-FAI, with the ANC-FAI section being on AS, that person would have to clear TSA security in Anchorage to access the AS flight to FAI. Now, by offering their own flight to FAI and BET, it streamlines the process for their connecting passengers by completely bypassing the TSA.

It's an interesting move by Era, and one that I would welcome with open arms. Fares on AS to fly ANC-FAI have been going steadily up due to a lack of any serious competition since DL pulled out of the market. 2F (Frontier Flying) has a few ANC-FAI flights on the B1900, but it's not enough of a seat presence to really affect the gorilla that is AS. But, the combination of Era and Frontier, as well as the convenience of bypassing TSA, might help to bring fares down on ANC-FAI.

It's in this morning's News-Miner: http://newsminer.com/2007/06/05/7332

I wish them well, 32 seats may be overkill on some days, but that's what the 1900 is for I guess.

So hows this theory sound. How much you guys want to bet Alaska reduces their flights in the winter and uses ERA to pick up the slack. The ANC - FAI runs on AS are notoriously empty most of the time and putting smaller aircraft would make sense. This would be a convenient way for ERA to provide easier northbound connections and for AS to right-size the route.

I don't know that I would say notoriously empty. Having lived in FAI for five years recently and still going back there on a regular basis, AS seems to do just fine on this route. Even through the winter they still offer seven or eight flights a day, and I doubt they'd have that kind of frequency if the passengers weren't there.

I think it all depends on whether or not AS codeshares with Era on ANC-FAI. If they do, I could see them pulling maybe one mainline flight, but not much past that. And judging from comments from Era's management in the ADN and Newsminer, it sounds to me like Era is doing this on their own initiative, not that of AS. So who knows.

With AS so in bed with PenAir, do we really expet them to codeshare with Era???

So I guess they're going to do this with Dash 8 aircraft, per the article? And supplement with the new (cough cough, ex-Continental) Beeches?

Hmmm... too bad they're not starting until September, as I've got a buddy that needs to get to FAI in July. Bummer.

Notoriously empty might be a bit dramatic, but they aren't getting great loads on the flights. Numerous times I've gotten on with 50 other people, healthy load for an RJ not a 737 of just about any size. Outside the normal busy times of year, I have trouble believing the route needs 7-8 737's running between FAI and ANC. I'm of the opinion, its more for the feed into the SEA flights than anything else.

I'm thinking certain days and times, it might be more realistic to have a smaller aircraft.

Even with three airlines flying the route, I doubt we will see prices drop too significantly. Nothing to the levels something like a WN would produce. This is still Alaska.

Unless I'm misunderstanding you, AS already codeshares with Era to ENA, HOM, VDZ, ADQ, and CDV. So it's just a matter of whether or not they will extend that codeshare to FAI.

I would guess yes, since AS and Era already "compete" on ANC-ADQ and ANC-CDV.

I find this quite interesting. I wish Era all the luck, but I don't think that this will do too well for them. Frontier Flying tried, and a few years ago they had many flights between ANC and FAI, but now they've cut down to 3 or 4 daily. (there might be more now that it's summer)

Another huge thing would be timing. When I've flown up to FAI through ANC, it seems that the first couple flights of the day on AS are nearly full due to Fairbanksans flying into ANC the night before and sleeping in the airport. Then the middle of the day flights die down, and the late evening flights fill up again with people catching red eyes out of ANC. So an early morning and evening flight would make the best sense to me.

FFS has four now, up from three in the winter. Two morning flights and two evening flights. In my experiences, even they aren't all that full midweek and sometimes even during peak times.

This is an odd market that ebbs and flows seemingly randomly, but I bet it just depends on the time of the month. It would be interesting to crunch the loads and see if its a pattern of some sort or its really just random.

I wish Era the best, but I don't know how many extra runs the route can support, especially in the winter. I can see why AS flies the route, the feed is valuable, but I don't know if there is that much additional strictly ANC-FAI traffic to support two airlines. Time will tell how this will all work out.
