Why No Air France To Abu Dhabi?

Thu Jun 07, 2007 2:51 am

I was wondering why Air France doesn't fly to Abu Dhabi (AUH)... Etihad (EY) is only having a single daily frequency to CDG and AF could use its extensive hub to serve Abu Dhabi.

Their A332 would be perfect for the route... Is it because they are short on A330's that they haven't opened it? or because KLM goes there? Connecting through DXB is too much of a hassle especially for the lucrative C-class travellers.

France has been tying extensive ties with the Emirate of Abu Dhabi especially on the cultural front recently opening the Sorbonne (famous French university, a section of the Louvre...)

Air France cargo does however fly to AUH.

Air France used to fly to AUH until 1998 with A310-300.*The flight was routing CDG-RUH-AUH.

AF propose a Limousine service to/from AUH for Business/First Class passengers arriving/departing at/from DXB.

As you said, the line is now KLM's job on behalf of AFKL, just like KWI. Probably AUH traffic/demand doesn't require the presence of both AF and KL at Abu Dhabi.

Yes, that's right, a limo service was offered from DXB. Abu Dhabi was still in AF's destination map, but was not flying there anymore, so AF passengers had to take the single flight to DXB first. This limo service was discontinued at some point in 2002.

Well I thought that Abu Dhabi flights were offered by AF until the end of 2001. For the 2001 summer timetable, one of the highlights was that 2 non-stop flights to AUH would be introduced and 3 via Riyadh. (just read this in a 2001 airliners.net thread: AF Summer Routes Presentation (by L'Espace180 Mar 6 2001 in Civil Aviation))

Correct. Air France closed AUH during the winter 2001/2003 program, and not in 1998.

It was part of a reduced program following 9/11 and the recession in the aviation business
At the same period, AF closed DFW on January 7th 2002, cancelled the second flight to MIA, and reduced frequencies to BOS, IAD.

They could still have an A319ER DEDICATE on the AUH route just like RUH... I've flown many times on A319ER of AF, and they're really confortable flights...

the small number of passengers (around 110) is really a plus , with excellent timings (daytime eastbounds and red-eye back to CDG)

They could ... but that would compete with KLM. And this is not a good policy for an airline to compete with... itself
It could endanger the profitability of KLM flight to AUH.
What do you think is better ?

- AF & KLM serving both AUH, but with lower loads (PAX spread on the two airlines) and less profit and "compete" each other on a route that doesn't really require two carrier

- KLM servig alone AUH, means higher yield, higher loads, more frequencies, more profits

Would/Could a AF-operated CDG<-->AUH route perform better than a KL-operated AMS<-->AUH route?

--- Personally, I think routes from AMS would usually be lower yielding than any route from CDG, except routes between AMS and the Netherland Antilles or Indonesia.

KLM has been well established on this route so unless there's a surge of demand, AF would rather focus on Dubai.
