Horizon Air Dash8-400 At Palwaukee, IL Airport

Thu Jun 07, 2007 11:58 am

Hello,

I was driving by Chicago Executive Airport, formerly known as Palwaukee Airport when I noticed what looked like a Horizon Airline plane in the distance. I drove up to the Signature Terminal to see it was a Dash 8-400 with a Canadian Reg #. Does anyone have any information on this plane as to why it was here and when it will depart? Even though I have seen other oddball planes at this airport this is the first one bearing an airline name. To top it off, Horizon doesn't even fly to any city in Illinois.

Any information would be helpful as I might try to take photos if it is still there in the morning.

Thanks,

Dave

I doubt UA would come all the way out to Prospect Heights to take a look at it. Perhaps Motorola wants some for the corporate fleet?

Does anyone know when this plane will be departing? Also, I have seen the house demo colors' plane here a few years ago so why does this one have full Horizon colors?

Not likely if it still had its Canadian reg on it. I'm guessing this is to be N428QX.

It just left PWK about an hour ago..10am CST. It headed due north right over MKE and then just turned east for YYZ.

Also the previous track on flightaware shows that it went for a 30min flight this morning at 8:12am, looks like a demo flight in deed.

I saw an unpainted Q400 at YZD on May 27th. It carried no registration, but had a sticker identifying it as Msn 4164 for Horizon Air. Maybe it was this one?

Because the plane is scheduled to be delivered to Horizon.

My guess is it was just out for a test flight. No big deal.... very common..

EMBQA,

Both thoughts did come to mind; just seemed odd but this airport has had some strange visitors in recent years.

Thanks for the comments.

I just got off the phone with one of my friends who is a ramper at KPWK. He said they parked at signature flight support and loaded about 25 pax. Dignitaries included-->Glenn Tilton and others from UA. He also went on to say that the airport manager said that UA is looking to possibly purchase this type at some point. This was only test flight to check the feasible of this aircraft.

If it was headed for Toronto, maybe it was going to Porter Air.

Jon Hilkevitch doesn't usually pick up much in the suburbs, and the Daily Herald is far too dumb to do something like watch Flightaware. Furthermore, everyone who cares/writes about transportation is focusing on transit funding. Perhaps UA brought it to PWK to avoid attention?

Since these birds are built in Toronto (Downsview to be accurate), why would a plane painted with Horizon markings be headed for Porter via Chicago? Could it just be headed back to the shop for some reason?

Looks like they weren't too sneaky. A couple of A.Net civilians picked up on that! We're awesome!

Wouldn't the 400 be the perfect replacement aircraft for Aloha?? Let alone all the sub 2hr CRJ trips as well as the E120's.....significant fuel reduction and far more cabin comfort than the original CRJ's which are getting long in the tooth.

I've always thought that. Inter-Island traffic in Hawaii is just the kind of route network the Q400 was designed for. But Island Air was forced to withdraw its Q400 (they were planning on getting more) when Go showed up and launched the current round of insane price wars using CRJs. Island Air was in no position to match those fares and I suspect their existing Dash 8-200 traffic has suffered. I wonder if they'll be able to hold out much longer. Too bad -- I always use them when I island-hop in Hawaii.

I think the Q400 would be perfect for UAX. I can see United ExPlus Q400s flying the mountain cities as well as the west coast flying.

Anybody wanna venture a guess as to what it was doing in Minneapolis before it came to PWK?

I wouldn't mind ACV being an all Q-400 city. QX already flies them into here, why not United as well?

So the next Horizon Air Q 400 ship to be delivered will be N428QX? I flew on N426QX on May 3rd. It still had that new airplane smell since it was delivered a week before that...... 25 April 2007.

It looks like the next ships to be delivered to QX are currently in Canadian reg # ...... C-FLTT, C-FMES, C-FMEU and C-FMFH. Check it out.......

Not for sure about their performance either, but I do know the CR7 did struggle during this past winter. I have heard rumors coming out of ASE that F9 will have Q400s in ASE this coming winter.

UAL could eliminate all the useless short SkyWest CRJ runs out of LAX. Also replacing the EMB-120s with the Q400 would probably be cheaper.

The aircraft was registered C-FLTL.

It did a demonstration flight at MSP, similar to the flight it flew out of PWK. Presumably this was another demonstration for NW (this is like the 3rd time a Q400 has been to MSP for a demonstration).
