Top Ten O&D Markets For SoCal

Fri Jun 08, 2007 7:08 am

Thanks to the site from the CVG O&D thread that shows daily O&D numbers for various US airports

http://www.faremeasure.com/

I was able to see the top O&D markets for the five major Southern California airports (LAX, SNA, ONT, LGB, and BUR).

The Bay Area (SFO, SJC, and OAK) was of course number 1, double the next highest market (NYC):

Rank Market Avg. Daily O&D Pax
1 Bay Area 20,020
2 NYC 10,173
3 Vegas 8,188
4 Sacramento 6,401
5 Phoenix 6,236
6 Chicago 6,135
7 Seattle 6,037
8 DC/Baltimore 4,953
9 Denver 4,104
10 DFW 3,937

I was surprised MIA/FLL/PBI didn't make the top 10 (only came in with 2,426 daily O&D passengers -- less than Portland, Houston, Atlanta, or Boston).

I was also surprised Sacramento came in so high at #4.

This can't possibly be right....with all those flights SW, US and UA have between LAX and PHX? And SMF is ranked higher? WN is the only player in that market and they aren't exactly hourly...and then you have ORD with hourly flights between AA and UAL on MD-80s, 757s, 767s, 777s, A320 and 319s....I know a lot is connecting but I think the O&D is significant too. THere is a huge desparity in the # of flights to Seattle vs. the number to the DC area from LA as well. Yet they are next to each other on the rankings.

Well, these passenger numbers are O&D numbers. There are definitely more flights to PHX (and ORD, etc), but many of those people are connecting passengers. Not many people connecting in SMF.
