NW CR9 Having Issues Already.

Sun Jun 10, 2007 6:48 am

Yesterday NW's CRJ-900 was badly damaged due to a nature related incident, I believe it being a bird strike upon arrival into MSP. Last nights MDW flight was cancelled, DFW was late today, and they continue to do maintnence on it between flights forcing more delays. Good thing I got on her before it got damaged.

The first day of operations the aircraft also had to return to the gate for maintnence. Before departing for Chicago Midway.

Given that a birdstrike can occur with any aircraft, how is this a CR9-related issue, as if it were the aircraft's fault as your thread title implies?

It doesn't suggest it, I just mentioned that it happened to the CR9, since there is one.

Might not have been your intent, but "NW CR9 Having Issues Already" can be read as some CR9-specific issue cropping up...

Whatever...

Do you have any idea why the MDW flight was cancelled? There's been bad weather around, so it wouldn't surprise me if it was just weather or crews running out of time due to delays. However a more seriously reason for a cancellation is not good.

Delays between flights for maintenance can be a concern, but that's probably a teething issue more than anything else as the crews and airline are adopting to the plane. I think its too early to cast judgment right now. Problems are expected, but I think its still interesting to see the problems, so this thread is interesting.

I don't think some small problems to start are a big problem. A bird strike definitely has little to do with the aircraft. I agree that the title was slanted towards thinking the CR9 had big problems.

Finally I can't believe I never had you on my respected users list, so welcome to that since you are one of A.net's best.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

Thank you, OPNLguy. I also fail to see how this is a CR9 issue, and I am definitely not a fan of the CRJ in any guise.

Wow, a bunch of nit picking over nothing.

Put yourself in the place of the plane.

If you walked outside and got hit by a bird "splat" and then weren't feeling well from work and had to back home, you, too could be saying that you are "having issues."

I'm sure you're all just as correct when discussing issues at say O'Hare Airport because of a snow storm. As long as the lights are on and Starbucks is pouring coffee, and the runways don't have potholes, the airport's just fine, it's not having issues, the weather is having issues, right?

Oh wait ...

The reason I mentioned it was that it could have been interpreted in a way other than he intended, and further, that if others read it the same way I did (which apparently some here have), his employer might (if they visit Anet) feel that it was some kind of disparaging remark.

The menu here says "Use relevant and describing topics" and I would presume it also to include "accuracy" in there, the lack of which creates context issues, which you (as a media person) should well understand.

I do understand.

And let's see. First day out on the job, birdstrike, being called back for maitenance, running late, it's having issues.

As minute as the problem(s) may be, it's not a good P.R. tour round for Northwest Airlines.

Are the CRJ-900 pilots a special pool, or are they all just from the normal CRJ crews?

Using your logic, I reckon that after a few more cases of "routine" stuff like flat tires, birdstrikes, and various minor/major mechanicals (that can and do happen to every aircraft out there at some point), the CR9 will then get tagged as the "problem-plagued" CR9, right?  Wink

It was cancelled due to maintnence.

Right now the only ones that were flying it were captains.

Thanks. I was just thinking if the CR9's had a very small specified crew base, and then they were having alot of irregular ops with it, that trouble could be on the horizon with staffing.

Burnise... stop spewing info unless it's correct. The weather on the 7th started a snow ball affect that rippled all day. It returned to the gate not for mx, but to remove pax for w&b balance reasons. It was late out of MDW for the same reason both stemming from MDWs short runways and the need for lots of fuel. Yesterday the MDW was canceled due to mx because the cockpit door failed in the locked position... with the pilots in it! The plane was not badly damaged yesterday either... I don't know where you get your info. This is typical new a/c teething problems... nothing new to XJ and certainly not a new concept!

Since the a/c is new, so are all the pilots on it. Right now the instructors from the -200 are flying it, to become instructors for the -900. When that's done, those instructors will be giving line instruction to the regular line pilots. The captains are all former avro captains and are pretty senior. The FOs are going to be a handfull of current pilots and the rest will be new hires. The 17 -200s are being staffed in the left seat by saab CAs therefore giving the opportunity for FOs to upgrade into the saab. Lots of movement at Mesaba now... a good time to get hired. It's about time good things come our way.

No, not problem-plauged, just a case of bad luck. Especially if it is happening in the first 3 days of service. But I do like how flat tires, birdstrikes, and minor/major mechanicals are "routine." I know when our flight crews come in and blow a tire on landing, take a bird into the engine, or break the stick shaker, they are thinking, "what a routine day."

After all of these issues...when do you think NW is going to replace those pesky CR9s?   Smile

I dunno... but a DC-9 is already booked to fly the crew home from the boneyard when the CR9's are scrapped.  Wink

More seriously, what is the schedule for implementing more CR9's into the fleet?

According to NW it was damaged by nature related incident. Of which caused several of the delays for maint.

And doesn't the airline business have a bit of superstition aura to it?

Despite it being that can happen every day or not, I'm sure some faithful NWA workers out there would just like to "get a break" and have a good luck streak every once in a while.
