AirTran Expands MSY Flying....Again.

Mon Jun 11, 2007 10:37 pm

AirTran will add a 6th daily flight on the MSY-ATL route as of 9/5/07.

Now, DL and FL will be closer than ever in the market in terms of frequency, with DL holding on to 8, and FL with 6. Historically, DL has always had, generally, double the flights of FL in the market. Perhaps it is a decrease in DL's in overall domestic capacity. But maybe some loyal DL flyers made the switch over to FL when DL cut back frequency from 12 to 8 and threw in RJ's. It's back to all mainline now of course, but for awhile there, they were running anywhere from two to three daily with CRJ's and/or ERJ's. I can tell you that all AirTran flights are full every day of the week with hardly no exceptions. When I took DL in the other day, the outbound 6:46pm flight back to ATL (MD-88) was booked to no more than 50.

Looking at the fares in the market, they are not cheap. Doing a quick check I see one-way fares in September starting at $136. The loweest I ever see them at now is $89 one way...and that's for a one hour flight. So it's not like this is a low yield, Las Vegas to Orlando route we're tallking about here. There is money to be made, and it seems like FL is doing just that. Times were very different before Katrina when DL filled up those 762's and 763's from here. The line at the DL counter was almost neverending. But the playing field has been leveled somewhat. What, if anything, will DL do to respond?

Any 737s down there or is it all 717?

All 717's. Would be nice to see some 73's blow in through here that's for sure.

Why? Other than increased capacity, what (if any) other benefits do their 737s offer over their 717s?

For selfish reasons. I like the way the 73G's with winglets look.  Wink

What I want to know is if FL will expand MSY beyond just flights to ATL. And I will tell you that everyone including FL is getting a premium to MSY....I paid over $800 for J-class between DCA and MSY, while most roundtrips on FL J are in the $500-600 range.

It looks like FL is doing well in MSY. I have no idea how CO is doing there, but my last flight was on a 757-300 and there were less than 60 people on the plane! OUCH!!! There were only three people in my part of the cabin. It was so empty they served us drinks at the gate in COACH!!!
Worked Hard. Flew Right. Farewell, Continental. Thanks for the memories.

With all due respect, that sounds pretty low yield.

It would be over $200 roundtrip for such a short flight...and that's a fare you don't see everyday. That's not incredibly low yield. You used to see fares in that market for $49 one way plus taxes.

My walk up ticket (3 day advance) last week on DL was $524 roundtrip, and FL was offering the same price.

I'd figure they're doing rather well... more marketshare than before the storm, higher fares overall, and less competition to both Houston and New York.

Relatively perhaps, but this was a route pre-K that one could easily find sub-$200 fares the day before departure. Now it's nearly triple that.

Ah, you must have been on that 7:00am-ish flight. That one is hit or miss depending on the day of the week. The 753 has generally done better in the market when it was on the 1:00pm IAH-MSY and the 3:00pm return. I guess scheduling has its reasons for putting it on the early morning turn. Cargo, perhaps?

Overall, CO is doing exceedingly well from here. They are running 13x daily on IAH-MSY now, more than they had pre-K, and they are once again all mainline to EWR.

They never had 13. Most they had pre-K was 11.

Gonna go home and consult my legion of sched books, but I remember us having 30dailies to Houston twice in the past... and I don't recall WN having more than 17 at any point.

WN had 20 for a long while (several years at least) before they cut it to 17. I think they cut the HOU flights (and 2 BHM flights as well) in October, 2004.
