787 Aft Pressure Bulkhead

Tue Jun 12, 2007 11:08 am

I found this article very interesting, Boeing doesn't list this company as one of their suppliers.

Eads is supplier to Vought and Alenia... not Boeing. So Boeing doesn't list them as a supplier. But yes, EADS is making the 787 aft bulkhead.

Don't they also make a similar piece in a similar way for the A380?

Is the 787 aft pressure bulkhead going to be the flat type bulkhead like the 739 has?

If you read the article states that the aft pressure bulkhead is a one piece dome.

I got bored with all the numbers all over the place on the article, so I got lazy and just went ahead and asked..... LOL!

Yes, a Boeing subsidiary (Hawker de Havilland in Australia) builds the A380 wing fences. They also build the winglets for the A330 & A340.

I think we will see many subcontractors supply to various aircraft OEMS. Spirit (were 737 & 787 noses are build) is bidding to take over some Airbus factories. Alenia will probably build big parts of the 787 and A350XWB.

I just hope the dome is much more durable than the ones they put in the 767s and other Boeing aircraft with domes. It will be interesting to see what the SRM will offer in terms of repairs.

Best wishes,

What problems have they had? The only pressure dome problem I am aware of was the 747 in Japan that blew because of a faulty repair.

I would say that might be the only one that was a news event. When I started working the 777, one of the first thing the mechanics where telling me. Is when you go up into the 48 section, be extra careful for the pressure dome. They told me that they are easy to damage and not very fun to repair.

That I can believe; I suspect the same may be true for the 787, A350, and most other planes as well. It is a very critical piece in a rather difficult spot. The composite ones may be less easy to damage, however, so that may make your life easier.

The pressure dome gets its strenght from its shape not the thickness of the material. All domed pressure bulkheads are very light weight and easily damaged. However, once they are installed about the only way to damage them is by dragging the tail or allowing it to corrode.
