Abnormal Routings For Weather

Tue Jun 12, 2007 1:47 pm

Hey guys, was looking on Flightaware and saw some pretty neat routings for weather. Found this one... anyone seen anything else neat like this lately?

I've been in wx before while jumpseating a ride, the radar showed some nice gaps which are safe to go through, but then, it closed and rather than risking it, we made 180 back, and made a wide detour... Pax wasn't happy, but they'd be complaining if the meals ended up on their faces anyways.

1h40 ended up as 2h30 ! LOL deviations like mad all the way!

Last week, someone decided to go through, the nice black gaps in the radar became green, then yellow, and before they knew it, it was a nice wall of red... and they cannot remember where the heavy cells were since it was all red... they probably ended up going through what was initially red anyways... pax wasn't happy, cabin crew wasn't happy, and the painters weren't happy! Some nice hail and & icing up there.

There was plewnty of fun to be had between MHT and CLT today. Deviations deviation. CLT was getting slammed for a little while by one massive cell. I was watching that thing from 100 miles out and it was one hell of a sight. Needless to say airplanes were takeing on extra fuel around the east today. What a fun day. Urgh. Now I am off to 3 days of school in CLT in the morning. I am looking forward to actually being on the ground in CLT for a mega storm again. It has been a little while. I get off on that stuff and being the pathfinder.

I flew on VS HKG-LHR about 6 weeks ago. When we left HKG, we travelled north for about 2 hours before turning west to head home. Flight should have been about 12 hours, we ended up aloft for 14 hours. Not fun with an 18 month old baby who was ill.

it amazes me how some pilots dont have a clue how to use wx radar, and we fly right through the crap that they claimed wasnt there, due to bad tilt angles, attentuation and just low knowledge of wx radar operation.....

so yeah the best way is to do it visually during the day and at night use the radar and lightning that you see visually Smile

Pilotaydin,
Don't forget the ball factor, too.
Some people would go on, trying to prove their clevernessor their virility.
This one probably frightened himself to death.
Others still will try it !

I remember a few years ago flying on Air Canada from MIA to YUL. We took off from r/w 9, heading east, then turned right and headed south until near Key Largo. We finally did a 180 and headed north. The captain said it was because a line of t-storms was blocking the departure routes to the north, so we had to fly south, gain altitude, and then we could fly over the wxx.

That's normal. When leaving HKG for Europe, you never fly on the great circle at first, but northbound for the first 90 minutes or so (or westbound), because planes don't cross over the Himalaya Mountain Range.

This was my flight AA2058/31March DFW-SJU. It wasn't fun going through that wx system theat had hit DFW the night before. When we took off we headed NE and I knew something was up. Took us a lil longer but if the turbulance we got going through the 'better' part of the front, I don't wanna know what it was like going through it!

Probably 20 or so. Many were to BWI. The routings some of the PIT-BWI flights ended up taking were quite interesting. One went through PA, WV, OH, KY, VA, and MD to make it to BWI.

Yeah heh... they way "usual" traffic is, they might as well name it Pittsburgh-Twighlight Zone air field er something...  silly

I am sure this afternoon was no different from yesterday for IAD. They had a ground stop because of a tornado warning, and according to one post, I think by OPNLguy, lightning struck one of the runways. We had a possible tornado here in Lancaster County as well near the MD-line. And up near LNS, there were reports of downed utility poles...

This is definitely some crazy... stuff...

PIT was almost as bad tonight as it was last evening. People stranded trying to fly east. We didn't have any diversions that I know of tonight. Just alot of people sleeping in the terminal overnight. We had a storm go through around 6ish. Ramp was closed for awhile but didn't cause too many problems here.

Had some fun this trip with the weather around the carolinas. Not too much to say past what a view really. Skirted in before the ramp closures and than scooted out to head home for much needed rest shortly there after.

Why do I fly???

This was me last week. Had a large cell north of ROA that took us about 40 miles out of the way.

There are a few routes where we have hi and low altitude routings in the FMS pre-programmed for weather or ATC issue. This was the high altitude routing with a deviation for storms.

Here's my SWA585 from earlier today. There was an east-west line on top of MCI, and when he got held to the SE of MCI, I had him head to the NW side of MCI and changed his alternate from STL to OMA so he could hold longer (less gas to get to OMA). The WX moved slightly south of MCI and he got right in on 27...
