Continental To Basel

Mon Aug 07, 2000 7:17 am

Most likely ContinentalEWR can answer it.

In swiss newspapers it was reported that Continental wants to open a EWR-BSL route with either the 767-200 or the 757. The city council of Basle has offered Continental landing discounts and incentives if they opened the route for at least one year.
Swissair discontinued BSL-EWR with the summer schedules because of only 60% load factor on the A330.

Is that very likely?

Yes, I have heard rumors about this, and this is one of the "secondary European cities" CO is targeting for service with the 767-200ER when they are delivered. I think this could be a profitable route for us, because we would be able to draw a considerable number of connecting traffic, as well as the huge NY/NJ metro area O/D traffic. Initially, this could be served by the 757-200ER, but it just might be pushing the 757's range a bit operating an eight-hour flight into the heart of Europe. That is good, because those damn ETOPS rules only apply to the transatlantic crossing, and there are plenty of airports in the area if a fuel stop is necessary due to a course change or something after the cross.

It's quite possible, since CO has the feed at Newark
to fill a 757-200ER or a 767-200ER. It depends on
whether CO wants to use those extra 767's to build
transatlantic service from Houston beyond London
and Paris, or open new markets from NY. Barcelona,
Stockholm, Oslo, Berlin, and Venice are also some

I've been hearing that there are three new planned transatlantic flights for the summer of '01, but thats all. These probably include secondary cities from NY that you mentioned, and canidates for this would be ATH, VEN, NCE, BCN, MUC, and others as well as Basel. When was that article from? If it was recent, CO might choose it for one of the services to get ahead in the European market. I'm not saying that the other routes wouldn't be profitable, but COs 767-200s aren't a strong match against DLs 767-300s and MD-11s which have been serving most of those cities for much longer than CO has. But if the rumor of three new transatlantic flights is true, I'd say Basel has a 50-50 chance since its unserved to the US. I mean, look at Tel Aviv. This is a city that DL doesn't operate to, but CO went for this city before Munich or Barcelona. They have slowly built up that market and are capturing the travelers for that route as their loyal customers. But my predictions for 2001 are:

and probably another Newark flight

Anyone else think or better yet KNOW?

I dont think that another flight from New York to Munich could be profitable. Lufthansa and Delta Air Lines are flying that route now, LH to Newark and Delta to JFK. Maybe a flight to Houston could be profitable because there is no flight from MUC to this region.

I would not expect to see BSL on the list for 01 unless the city pays CO alot of money to fly there. MUC is definitely NOT on the list, not enough business pax. BCN and ATH are very possible adds from EWR. Out of IAH, MAD is the only realistic possibility because of connecting traffic opportunities to Latin America.

Do you think there's any chance of Continental adding an IAH-MAD non-stop any time soon? Like you mentioned connecting traffic would probably make it work, considering all the Latin American and Mexican service CO has out of IAH.

I'd still like to see CO add Manchester, Rome, and Frankfurt. I personally think a Santiago flight routed EWR-IAH-SCL would do just fine, but if rumors that I've heard come true, we may just have Lan Chile flying IAH-SCL long before CO gets to it....

Go Astros!

CO operated EWR-MUC in the early 1990's briefly, with a DC10-30 but pulled the route. I don't think there is enough demand and DL and LH already serve it. I would think CO would go for Athens, which is underserved since TWA pulled its JFK-ATH route in 1996, but this would be a seasonal flight I would think. Istanbul, Nice, and Barcelona are all possibilities. Hard to say....it depends how the 767 deployment will pan out.

Agreed. ATH is underserved and Olympic Airways is not a first rate operator. This is a route TW should restart with 763ERs. Its also territory that has been "Allianced." Too bad TW pulled the plug on Rome. Post Karabu thats one to get back quickly. I would forgo Spain, American/Iberia have that locked up. Alitalia isn't surefooted yet however. Year round daily STL-FRA, LGW, and CDG service is important.

It is sad that SR discontinued BSL, however What should City of Basel pay
CO ?

As you'll are aware that the Airport is physically *not* in Switzerland.
France/Germany also have domain over it too   Its in reality called
Mulhouse/Friedberg(sp ?)/Basel

The only airport where EU residents can get duty free for flying in to the airport. It is not a very big airport.

Nycank: The cities of Basel/Mulhouse/Freiburg would give CO big discounts on landing fees if they opened it.

Swissair had 60% on the A330-200, that should be enough to fill the 767-200.

The terminals are in switzerland while the runway is in france. The other terminal is in germany.

If you don't think that EWR-Basel will be inaugurated in '01, then what?

RE: Continental To Geneva?

Speaking of airports of Swiss cities located in adjacent countries, is CO considering Geneva service? There is currently no EWR-GVA service, and the only service from JFK is the flight formerly known as SR111.

Is the demand there? We are talking about connecting the financial center of the free world with one of Europe's biggest financial hubs. Furthermore, wouldn't many UN employees who use the SR flight prefer EWR? I find it amazing that there is demand for an EWR-MXP flight, but apparently not EWR-GVA...
