Airlines That Fly 744s Into YYZ.

Thu Jun 14, 2007 2:50 am

I was wondering what airlines were left flying 744s into YYZ. AC retired them in 2004, BA switched LHR-YYZ over to 777s, heard AF were flying in a few 744s for the summer, not sure about KLM. LH supposedly 340s now.

KLM is atm flying the 744(M) on KL691/692, however that will (or has) change seeing less 744 flights into YYZ. For more info, see the KL 77W thread

Off the top of my head, we still see BA, AF, KLM & Korean

BA = seasonal (winter), occasional summer
LH = occasional
KAL= not in some time
KLM = regular for now but changing to 77W/74M mix soon
AF= seasonal (summer)

Air France this year was a surprise honestly, and i don't think it'll happen again. Lufthansa might bring the 744s back post A380 introduction. Virgin Atlantic if they return will probably be 343 so thats a no. BA i think will keep at least 1 744 through the winter.

Alas i think Toronto will never again be the 747 hub it once was...

They did, with the 742 from LGW, started in 2000, ended after 9/11.  Smile

VS started service LGW-YYZ in June 2001 but it didn't last long. I think they dropped it soon after 9/11.

Don't forget as well that YYZ sees quite a few 747 freighters. Yeah the number of 747s at YYZ, like at most other airports, isn't what it used to be.

Mid Nineties:
AC, AF, AI, AR, AZ, BA, BR, CP, CX, IB, KE, KL, LH, MP, OA, PK, 4X.

Did I miss any?

I probably should have left BR off. EVA was freight only.

Swissair also operated 747s to YYZ in the past. I remember flying one of their brand new 747-300s YYZ-ZRH with a stop at Mirabel airport in Montreal soon after they went into service about 1983 (Swissair was the launch customer for the 747-300).

If you go back a few years before the mid-90s, there was also Wardair and (not quite so far back) Nationair.

The Nationair 747 was an ex-Wardair aircraft.

Cathay Pacific flys a 747-400F into YYZ 3 times a week, Korean Air is in with its 747-400 twice a week.

There was a treat about this awhile back, and surprisingly YVR gets more 747 traffic then YYZ, due to the large amount of Asian flights that come in, off the top of my head I can think of a few YVR flights. BA, QF, BR, CX, JA, China Airways and that is it off the top of my head, but it is surprising how much 747s we get here vs YYZ.
Keep the shinny side up!

Does Korean still send it's 747 Cargo into YYZ as well? It was always strange to see the two planes land one after another later in the evenings. Kalita Air is sending an older 747 into YYZ on occasion with freight charters.

Up until a few years ago, LY would send 744 to YYZ

YQX probably gets almost as many 747s nowadays as YYZ does. Mind you, these are all tech stops and medical diversions.

AI flies 772 to YYZ....the 744's were never operated by AI to YYZ...it used to be the 742 upto about 1996 or so, thereafter there was a gap in service and they resumed a couple of years back with the 772... smile

I don't think that Gander gets 2-3 747's a day!

In the wintertime, neither does YYZ on some days anymore. I was exaggerating a bit of course with my Gander reference. YQX does indeed get more like 2-3 747s a week. But they also get a lot of other unique visitors. Looking at the flight tracker, in the past week, they've had several AN-124s, an ATA L-1011 (that won't happen much longer), a DC-9 flying overseas and a B741, among others.
