I lived in Woodbridge, VA (just south of D.C.) for four years and cannot recall ever having a tornado warning (or watch). I would think this is an infrequent event for the area. Interesting bit of news.

Great shot of holding patterns, though.

"Good" news: the warning was just canceled but another line of really ugly storms are bearing down on Baltimore and should be over BWI in about 20-30 minutes or so...

If all that were not enough, one of the runways at IAD took a lightning strike and had to be closed for temporary repairs...

Well that would explain the term "pavement failure" on the FAA website when I looked at the IAD groundstop..

Woah!!! Some powerful stuff breezing on through earlier this evening. Up here in Lancaster/York County, there was a possible tornado in the southern part of the county. Spotters even reported funnel clouds in Southeastern York County. Utility poles were also snapped along PA 272 near Wakefield, PA, which is pretty much in the middle of nowhere. I set some counts down there about a month ago. Nothing but wide open farmland as far as the eye can see...

There were also snapped poles near LNS too...

Just checking in.....ya we had wind gusts in excess of 75 MPH with the rain being blown horizontal. Was out on the ramp lookin out the door and the VS 340 was bouncing back and fourth. I was at B and I could not see anything but a little bit of a tail of an aircraft at D.... visibility was horrible. Was pretty bad for about 30 minutes then it cleared up just in time for the next round that just went through.

I did see the airport ops vehicles heading out to the runway to check out the strike. Maybe they can patch it up quickly. We are still getting pretty heavy lighting in the area though.

I had to shut down up here as most of the Baltimore area was under a tornado warning for the better part of an hour. We had some really heavy rain, a bit of pea-sized hail and some wicked lightning but are no worse for wear. The WMAR-TV Doppler radar had cloud tops at about 39,000 ft. Pretty decent but not like the 55,000 foot monsters you see in OK, TX, KS, NE, etc.

Is IAD back to normal yet? BWI didn't appear to have many issues...

I only live 5 miles or so from the airport and as of 840 pm, we've had a pretty sustained period of thunder/lightning- at least for the past 45 min, and according to fly.faa.gov, there is another ground stop, with 2+ hours delays. Boy am I glad I'm not traveling tonight!

I live 30 miles south of IAD in Prince William County. Been here since 1991. We have one or two tornado warnings every summer. None have ever touched down on this side of the Potomac, but over in MD, they haven't been so lucky. La Plata got hammered a few years ago.

I was deadheading down to CLT this afternoon. We had just boarded a Mesa ERJ when the storm hit. I was plastered looking out the window at this very powerful storm. I saw it push a baggage cart 50' across the ramp and flip a carry-on cart, breaking the top shelf off sending it flying. No planes damaged around the A gates but that was just luck. Bad storm.

I've lived in Northern Virginia (8 DME south of DCA) for most of my life (41 years) and there are about 5 or so tornado watches a year. A watch box covers such a large area. Tornardo warnings for the counties that split IAD (Fairfax and Loudoun) happen a few times a year. Since the invention of Dopplar RADAR, tornado warnings are more frequent, since no longer do tornados have to be confirmed sighted visually, but only the RADAR signature.

Unfornately we did have a deadly tornado in Annandale on April 28th, 2002 which killed 3 and injured 122. There have been a few other tornados here in Northern Virginia. One minor one in the mid-90s. I wasn't in town much of the 1990s, however in 1997 a small tornado passed through Arlington.

Albeit a number a years ago....On April 1, 1973 in Fairfax County had a tornado touch down three times near Pickett Shopping Center with two serious injuries. And the one I remember the most was in 1979 at Woodson High School causing major damage. I went to a high school football game at that high school 4 days later and remember seeing tiles stripped from roofs.

But as mentioned before, the southern Maryland and La Plata area seem to have the recent bulls eye just like trailor parks.

I saw tornadoes on the field at IAD back in the late summer of 2004. They passed to the North of all the passenger terminals and parking, but were visible from the A and B concourses.

On a funny note: They were making announcements to stay away from the windows...so what did people do...run to the windows to see what was going on!!!

I wonder what the tops were up here in Lancaster... We had a nice anvil up here with that same storm that produced those funnel clouds in York County. The anvil was right over head while the actual core of the storm was about 10 miles or so to the northeast at the time...
