What's The Life Cycle Of An Airport?

Thu Jun 14, 2007 6:50 am

Not sure if I'm getting the wording right, but considering no major upgrades are done, what do you think the average age, in years, is of an airport before it gets (or should get) a major make over?

I ask this because I always feel most US airports are in dire need of one. It seems that a lot of the major US airports were built (or had major upgrades) in the 70s and early 80s. Save for a few (SFO, ORD, JFK T4/9, DCA), most US airports seem to be stuck in the past. Poorly lit, cramped, etc.

Airport terminals are no different then any other public space, (schools, government buildings, even hotels and restaurants can fall into this category) so I don't think there is any specific airport life cycle. If you think some of these airport are bad you have not been into enough older schools or government buildings where it can be much worse. A building built in the 70-80s can last over 100 years with proper maintenance, and I am not talking about major overhauls (which of course are sometimes needed and welcome) but just preventative maintenance.
