Strike At Indian (IC), Chaos Ensues

Thu Jun 14, 2007 4:58 pm

I'm surprised there hasn't been a thread on this as yet.

To cut a long story short, members of the Airine Coporation Employees Union (ACEU) the largest union at Indian (IC) went on a flash strike yesterday. The Civil Aviation Ministry and the Delhi High Court have declared the strike illegal. Only 40 flights were cancelled yesterday (out of 300 plus) but with cabin crew joining ground staff and engineering staff on strike, the impact could be worse today. Other airlines are virtually running full and fares have shot up even on the low-cost carriers.

Why have fares "shot up". Does India not have any regulations against instant fare increases? Don't fares have to be posted in advance? The Kingfisher CEO I beleive was quoted today as saying fares would "now reflect the true costs of flying". Was he saying airlines would raise fares or that some mechanisim was going into place to prevent cut rate tickets? None of the four articles mentions anything about fare increases.

I meant Spot-fares - which thanks to the glut of capacity were always reasonable - one could get a same-day return DEL-BOM ticket at the counter on a full-service carrier at the airport counter for around Rs 8000 (approx $200) return. Yesterday, spot-fares hit Rs 12000 plus, because of the IC strike - and DEL-BOM is decently served. On sectors like DEL-CCU (in the strike was complete in Kolkata) return fares on low-costs touched Rs 10000.

So any updates from today? They should get this resolved soon!

I can imagine that PP won't have much luck tabling the "new aviation policy" to the cabinet today!

Slightly ill-informed article, but then again most of the BBC's India coverage is...

Cricket - I am sorry but I have to disagree with you there. As a person of Indian origin who has lived in India and the UK, I find the BBC's coverage of India very well informed and balanced. I think the Indian media could learn a lot from the BBC in the differentiation of fact, opinion and fiction.

Back to the topic in hand, I am waiting to see when the first AI 747 / 310 and IC 320 is repainted into the new scheme. I think those 747s will look quite good.
Reach for the stars - they are closer than you think!
