GOL And DL Announce Agreement

Thu Jun 14, 2007 9:27 pm

What seems to be a coup against Star Alliance and its carriers, GOL the owner of the old Varig, and Delta have announced a baggage and ticketing agreement. The agreement is effective July 1st, and will allow Delta and its passengers to fly to new destinations in South America. Is this a harbinger for a possible SkyTeam entry for GOL?

Follows GOL agreement with CO this week as well. CO To Sell Gol's Tkts For Flights In Brazil+S.Am. (by AF086 Jun 12 2007 in Civil Aviation)

I would hardly call this a coup. United and other Star partners like Lufthansa have teamed up with TAM which provides a multi class product versus GOLs single class LCC concept.

TAM doen not provide a multi-class product on their domestic routes, only international, just like GOL/Varig.

The products are about the same. I flew them both last month.

So what about Skymiles? I just booked a CMH-ATL-GIG on DL then GIG-CGH, GRU-EZE on Gol then EZE-ATL-CMH back on DL. Can I get skymiles for the Brazil and Argentina segments, that would be a nice bonus.

GOL the owner of the old Varig

Actually Gol is the owner of the new Varig. The old Varig is still owned by FRB (the old Varig cannot use the "Varig" brand anymore).

The difference is indeed mininal.

You can be sure that an agreement with AF-KL is not far as well.

This is great news.

I wonder about Skymiles as well. I just booked MCO-GRU but I'm going to CNF.

Anyways, this is great news  Smile))))))))

So American Airlines will be left with no partner????

TAM is already a FF partner with American Airlines as well as Air France and TACA.

The TAM-AA partnership ends Nov14th once the UA partnership is approved by governmental authorities.

This is a great move for both DL and GOL.

I'm going to daydream about a GOL aircraft in ATL now  Smile

And there are rumors about deals between Gol and UX also, a future SkyTeam possible member.

No doubt that after TAM agreements with some Star carriers, Gol/Varig become the major alternative in Brazil and with their international plans for Europa and South America, the best alternative in South America.

And now agreements with CM, CO, DL, UX and probably very soon AF/KL... seems that G3/RG is really a target of SkyTeam.

Entry into SkyTeam would be great for everyone involved. SkyTeam will be able to give it's flyerbase a choice of more destinations, and GOL will be able to fill many of its intra-South American Flights with SkyTeam flyers. This also will plug a hole in the SkyTeam network.

Yes, both TAM and Gol provide you with a slow check-in experience, absence of up-to-date departure information and minimal staff at the gates.

Gol is not a partner of Delta or Continental. Delta and Gol signed a run of the mill interline agreement - the type of agreement that deserves no midia space because it is so common.

To put it in perspective, a selection of just some of the other ITBs concluded this week alone were (per IATA) between :

Aer Lingus and Etihad
Air Moldova and Atlasjet
Air China and Air One
Air France and LAM Mozambique
AVIACSA and Air Comet
Cathay Pacific and Mahan Air
Dragonair and Air Berlin
El Al and Eritrean Airlines
Ghana International and Air Zimbabwe
JAL and Kingfisher
Malev and KRASAIR
Syrian Arab Airlines and Armavia
Transaero and AIr Astana

Indirectly they do, namely through LTU's flights to Phuket and Bangkok, and seeing as how AB is the official owner of LTU nowadays, it figures that AB would sign such an agreement.

This is a very interesting development. I can remember about a year or so ago, Continental was talking to GOL management. This may bode very well for the SkyTeam presence in South America. It has been a hole in their network that has been needed to be filled.

Now the question is that if we indeed have a GOL-DL tie up, JJ-UA tie-up, what happens to AA in the Brazilian market? True that AA has the largest presence of a US airline in the Brazilian market. Will they indeed rely more and more on LAN, for additional Brazil, or is it possible that Aerolineas Argentinas will become part of AA-South American partners? This is even more interesting considering that Avianca, and Copa are rumored to be joining SkyTeam as well.

So in the end SkyTeam would end up with Copa, Avianca-Ocean Air, Gol-Varig, and Aero Mexico for Latin/South American members. Very interesting!
