MIA - Miami Airport Obscure Question

Thu Jun 14, 2007 10:49 pm

Forgive me if this has changed, but are there still no baggage trolleys available for passengers at Miami Airport?

My memory is fading but I recall you had to use the Porters if you couldn't manage all your luggage. Right?

A jetlagged Mr and Mrs Standby + 1 child + 1 infant + enough baggage to supply a small country are arriving on Swiss (Terminal D?).
The plan is to meet Mother-in-law + baggage weighing more than 3 small countries arriving from LGA on American 1 hour later.

I expect a 0.5km walk at least!
Well, who needs to go to a gym when you can just go travelling with children?

Thanks for your replies and I look forward to seeing American friends here at our local Airport where I believe you will impressed with the free baggage trollies that even go up and down escalators  Wink
Or failing that, the fantastic viewing terrace here at Zürich!

Yes MIA has baggage trolley rentals located throughout the entire airport (customs, baggage claim, main terminal, even the parking lot garages).

Standby87 you will find baggage trolleys available for free inside customs. Outside of that, you might have to rent one, but you can generally find one unused sitting around.

Traveling with children can be difficult, but they of course are a blessing.

We used to have a great viewing terrace at MIA at Concourse E on the roof. 9/11 changed all of that.

But you can go up to the top of the airport hotel and get a good view.

Zurich may have a great terrace, but Geneva now has those ugly coverings on many of the windows so that you can't really see clearly.

Thanks folks - that's great info!

Kellmark -
Also, appreciate the info about the Airport Hotel roof - we might go there on the way back.
Yes, I remember the viewing area from a trip in 1989: happy days!

Cheers and all the best

They always have a lot of them [even in the sidewalk outside the terminal] and for free.

I don't believe so. The 8th Floor (pool - exercise room - jogging path - snack bar - cocktail lounge) has been closed for years. I was down there for a retirement party three weeks ago and the elevator to the 8th floor is blocked off and the stairs to the 8th floor inside the Top of the Port restaurant on the 7th floor are blocked off.

This is a pretty decent restaurant, BTW, especially by airport restaurant standards. You can get a very nice view, a decent bottle of wine for under US$30, and a decent meal, all with decent service. It sure beats sitting in the departure lounge with the smell of pizza and cinnamon "temptingly" wafting through the terminal...

Just make sure to budget enough time to go through security if you're departing -- TSA at MIA is a complete, disorganized mess. Tip: figure out which terminals are connected on the "secure" side, and then go through the shortest security line, connecting to your departure terminal on the "back side". IIRC, security at D and E is terrible, but C is OK.

Remember also that the E Security entry point has been moved forward and expanded to accomodate the closing of A for repair and the reopening of the E Admirals Club, which will now be inside the entry point. I have always found that, depending on the time of day, the D and A entry points are always jammed. If you do not mind walking down the long scary cooridors between D and A, and you are flying out of A, the C entry is often a diamond in the rough that no one notices and you can get through pretty quickly. There are often no line there. Likewise E. Before the switch, it could be the worst nightmare but between departure peaks, like 1-3 pm, it can clear out and be an easier way to get to a D gate in less time than waiting at the D entry. Now that it has been enlarged and improved, perhaps it will be an even better option.

The airport hotel dining room has always been an oasis in a desert. At least now some of the shopping mall options are coming on line for folks and more dining options should be also. Inside security dining is horrible and you nailed it regarding the smells. I have nothing per-se against Cinnabon but walking out inner D to outer D and enjoying the Cinnabon aroma on a humid day in that air conditioned hallway is always a bit much to take. Ugh.
