Attn PDX Spotters: LH A340-600 At PDX Tommorow

Fri Jun 15, 2007 9:37 am

Yep you heard it, what I think is the first time a A340-600 has been at PDX (normally the PDX-FRA flight is ran by a A340-300).  Smile
I got the email from someone.

Hello KPDX!

I follow the Airliners.net forums pretty regularly (though I haven't
yet convinced myself to spend the money to join up), so I thought you
might be interested in this little tidbit: Lufthansa is flying the
A340-600 into PDX tomorrow, Friday, June 15th. As you probably already know,
it is usually a A340-300, and this will be the first visit in PDX
history (that I know of, at least) of the world's longest airliner. It is
scheduled for 11:25, though that varies by day: flypdx.com will have the
most up to date information tomorrow morning.

I came about this information because I will be part of the cabin crew
cleaning the beast tomorrow - I've gotten direct confirmation from
higher ups in the company I work for about it.

Get out there and spot, if you'd like! Also, I'm passing this along to
you in the hopes that you can get out the word on the forums - I'm sure
many would love to check out this visit. Hopefully LH will make this a
regular thing, eh? More capacity for PDX is always a good thing.

Hopefully someone with a camera gets some pictures!!! Big grin

Although I don't go to PDX that often even if my aunt and uncle live in Portland, I'm VERY surprised at this increase in capacity. I knew LH performs well here, but I didn't think I'd ever imagine an A346 there.

Somebody get pictures of this plane. Now if DTW were that lucky every now and then. Funny how a city 1/4 the size of mine gets an A346, yet my city can barely fill up a 767 to LHR.  boggled

Might be as simple as the A343 is in the shop for a couple days and they found the A346 to be the best replacement.

It's actually more like 1/2 the size as I don't imagine DTW is over 8 million  Wink

Most likely an a/c subsititution OR a higher than usual pax count (large group) or cargo load. That said, it won't surprise me to see LH upgrade the route permanantely to the A346 if:

a.) threat of new competition between PDX and Europe, i.e. KLM or NW wanting to start PDX-AMS
b.) LH retires their A343 fleet
c.) cargo and pax revenues on this route continue their upward trend.

Someone else on this website said that a 744 has come into PDX on this route as an a/c subsitution in the past.

Sounds like an aircraft substitution, not a permanent increase in capacity.

Nice spotting opportunity, hope somebody catches it on film.

Probably as simple as a preplanned swap to deal with a high-load day. We are basically a 737-A320 station, yet for summer traffic we have a 757 every Saturday, and they fill just as well. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the 340-600 were crammed full of summer vacationers.

Hmmmm. I'm tempted to go out and snap a few decent photos (not sure where the best place would be). If I do, I'll post them. However, I've already got a full day planned tomorrow to get ready for Mexico.

Thanks for the heads up!

If they're landing on runway 10R, I'd say along Marine Drive just west of Salty's, or even down by the boat shop there on Cornfoot Road where the cyclists and joggers park. If its 28L, cell phone waiting area over by The Embassy Suites. You can park near the treshold of 28L off either NE Air Cargo Road or in that construcion vehicle staging area on the SW corner of NE 82nd Ave and Alderwood.

Nice headsup KPDX ! Although I won't get out there, thats the kind of info I love to hear. I'm also hoping to hear about some of those 767's their gonna paint here.

See you on the 23rd!

What's the reason for this aircraft change? Excess demand or did something go tech in FRA?

Don't know for sure, but I think it's a response to demand. LH469 is fully booked in both classes. BTW, the config. for today's flight is 72C/263M. Anyone know how many A346s are in this newer configuration?

I actually did check your thread before I posted, but none of the A346s are listed with the 72-seat C-class. This new version must have just been introduced very recently. I wonder how many are giong to be converted.

no I don't think so and I'll double-check it tomorrow at the work.
I assume that they made Eco seats to Business seats due to high capacity.

EDIT: as you can see on this pdf the standart config is still 66/279, but the also operate with 54/315 or 72/263

Is that the LH A346 parked at the end of the concourse there of this live PDX picture? It looks long, whatever kind of plane it is.

According to the seat map in our res system, only 2 seats in Business remained unassigned, and only 8 seats in coach remained unassigned at time of departure - or about 98% load factor. An 343 would have been way overbooked.

It may have been either a tech-sub aircraft, or due to a group or general overbooking of the 343. I'm leaning towards a tech-sub, and the high load factor is a result of the system allowing more seat sales due to increased capacity. That would depend, of course, on how long the res system showed a 346 prior to todays departure.

Either way, I hope it happens more often.

Today's flight was extremely overbooked on the A343 with some very important customers on board. About a week ago the increased capacity was requested to accomodate the heavy load. I haven't heard anything, but I wouldn't be surprised if the A346 begins to pop up more often in PDX.

Flightaware is very unreliable when an aircraft is outside of FAA airspace, though sometimes it gives you the flightplan of the entire flight, even if the flight path isn't fully shown on the airshow.

Quoting PDXBJV (Reply 25):

That's very unusual. Maybe they were avoiding a major storm? Unless it's a Flightaware screwup, it had to be for operational reasons.

I hope the A346 coming to PDX means that for LH and PDX the best is yet to come! BTW: Anyone know the registration of the A346 that arrived in PDX?

Isn't she one of the most beautiful birds in the sky? Have been on a couple of LH and SA A346 lately and must say that I really love the plane. It's quiet, has a great interior and is simply a pleasure to look at.

Too bad that A346s are no longer very popular with airlines.
