Oh my gosh - poor giraffe! How does a pilot not see that? And don't you think he'd have enough sense to go around?

I'd guess the giraffe ran onto the runway just as the plane was landing or on take-off run - they move pretty fast when they set their (tiny) minds to it. Pilot probably didn't have time to react.

The record running speed of a giraffe is 34.7 miles per hour (56 kilometers per hour). If the pilot was on a take-off roll and the Giraffe came from left at this speed from behind the bushes the giraffe would have to stop...... ( Ofcourse, coming from the right the pilot should have stopped... )

Ouch. Four and a half tons of solid elephant versus a 800 kilogram Cessna. Probably a bad idea ... must be like driving a small car into a concrete wall at 100kph ...

Exactly. That giraffe should have known that colliding with a 1000kg Cessna 172 taking off at 55 knots would have caused it severe bodily harm. What was it thinking.

When i was in Kenya and Tanzania, each time before landing on a safari-strip, we'd overfly the strip at low altitude to scare the animals and mak ethem go away, but then again if he was on a takeoff run, thats a whole different story Big grin

I fly on the KC-10, while landing at Hurlburt Field we had a deer go under the #3 engine as the nose wheel was coming down. Do you think we had time to go around........absolutely not, we barely had time to figure out what it was!! So don't judge the pilot.  no

Also, Buffalos in Costa Rica (Coto 47 Airstirp with TI-AUU Piper Aztec, writeoff) and a deaf man who got decapitated by a wing of a Piper Cherokee registration TI-AGV.

Here in Costa Rica it is VERY important to perform a visual check on the intial leg before landing as many of the airstrips are uncontrolled and a lot of times there are people walking around or on them, as well as animals wandering around. In an airstip by the Atlantic Coast, it is surrounded by homes and in another, there are some cows just next to the RWY. Thankfully, these cases are quite rare.

Regards,
Tomas.

With the low approaches at Lindbergh Field and the tall giraffes at the San Diego Zoo, I'm just surprised that we don't see more of this!

Seriously, sad incident for all involved.

Try lodging a Sandhill Crane in between the strut and wing on an Aeronca 7AC. Could only fly in circles to the right. Managed to set down in a wide pasture. Groundlooped anyway. Damage to the right eileron and the leading edge.

Messy trying to dislodge the bloody thing. Lots of cleanup required when I got home.

Who says that the pilot didn't try to go around? I came pretty close to hitting a flock of deer on a runway once - it was night, and the reach of the landing light doesn't give you much time to react. I did go around, and did clear them, but a giraffe is a lot taller than a deer.

I was at DEN yesterday afternoon and saw several Cottontail rabbits hanging out on the ramp right under the jetway. I was surprised to see that no one really paid any attention to them. I guess it is quite normal and does not cause any problems but it was a little surprising to me.
