Runway Lettering Trival Question

Mon Aug 07, 2000 10:10 pm

OK guys and gals here is a trivia question for you.

As you all know runways can carry the letters L,C,R, and W behind them....and as you know....

L stands for left.
R stands for right.
C stands for center.

But wait a second..............W?????

Yes that is used to designate certian runways at some airports. But what does it mean???

I'll give you a hint. It deals mostly with the runway and you will never see it painted on it's surface.

Good Luck!!!!

It's for "W" for seabase for boat airplane landing spot without the letter on the water. They know designed for landing spot area... I have seen Jeppesen chart in Fairbanks, Alaska it's just next to main runway and the small canal for seaplane landing spot.

Did you know about of some the runways have more than 4 runways at the same bearing course for example 002/182 degrees with four runways. What would you called RWY? All they have to designed 36L/18R and 36R/18L then other side are 35L/17R and 35R/17L. It has four same degrees runways at Dallas/Ft. Worth airport.

We have a couple of winners. W does designate a water runway.

Fairbanks International does have a water runway:

Juneau, Alaska Also has a seaplane ditch available

Anyway hope yall had fun with that one....
