Layover Times: Estimate?

Sun Jun 17, 2007 11:50 am

On average, how long does an aircraft, in particular a long-haul aircraft, layover at its base before flying the route again? I'm thinking in particular the AC A345s that do the YYZ-HKG route. 12 hours, 24 hours, more? Is there always a spare available in case of breakdown?

I can tell you for CX in New York, the aircraft generally lays over about 2/3 hours before going back to HKG. A346 for the nonstop, and B744 for the flight via YVR. SA's 343 to DKR and JNB from JFK spends about 10 hours at JFK, as the market mainly goes for overnight flights. Finnair's MD11 to HEL spends roughly three or four hours at JFK.
