DL Begins Free Wifi For CRC Members

Sun Jun 17, 2007 4:33 pm

Beginning Friday, June 15, DL started giving free t-mobile WiFi access to their Crown Room Club members in the DL CRC's

This does not apply to Business Elite passengers in the CRCs or Biz-E lounges.

Access is via pre-paid t-mobile 1 day access cards available for free to CRC members from the ticket agents at the CRC help desks.

Ouch! Why not? Selectively charging $10 (or whatever) for internet access seems like a silly way to annoy someone paying $1000s for a single flight.

This is great news, bringing the CRC's up to the high standards of the Worldclubs and Presidents Clubs. With broad, unrestricted reciprocal lounge access, universal free alcohol, and universal free Wi-Fi, the skyteam trifecta of lounges is further separating itself from the paltry offerings of the US, UA, and AA lounges.

I think CO and NW have been pressuring DL to include free wi-fi due to the broad, unrestricted reciprocal lounge access policy. Since Business Class passengers are not under the CO/NW/DL lounge membership umbrella, DL is free to treat them however they see fit. It is my estimation that DL did not want to offer free Wi-Fi to its members. I think it was changed as sort of a "requirement" for having reciprocal lounge access with NW and CO. This is purely conjecture on my part, of course.

DL used to give free CRC memberships to all their Platinum FFers (unlike CO and NW). This year DL ended the free access to Platinums, so now it is more important to make the benefits the same as their fellow Skyteam airlines. I think that in the long run, T-mobile will be tossed in favor of DL's own system (much like the CO PCs), but the interim step is necessary due to a long term contract with t-mobile.

Sure, but that does not explain why would DL want to screw over its best paying passengers? I'd certainly leave with a bitter taste in my mouth after being forced to pay $10 (in addition to my $4000 J ticket) for net access, while CRC/PC/WC members get it "free" with their <$500 per annum membership.

I can understand why DL added 'net access, just not why the added restriction on their best customers.

This seems petty to me, esp as CO and NW offer FREE WI FI for all. It would be interesting if DL employees simply start giving the card out, but I'm sure they aren't allowed to do that.

Oh well, at least it is a positive move on DLs part.

Does this apply to Amex Platinum members as well? They're covered under the same NW/CO lounge agreement...

The Platinum AMEX card holder is not a member of the club, AMEX pays your entry (in part via the annual fee). However, you are NOT a club member. This is evident as you can't get into a club for an airline you're not flying (saw an AMEX Plan. denied entry into DEN CRC because he was on NW).

Related to this, is the WIFI free if you are a Presidents or WC member?

AA has had free wifi at just about all of its lounges for several years.

Complimentary Alcohol ?

Broad, reciprocal access to the lounge networks of two other major domestic legacy carriers?

I just with CO would take DL over...... Great FA's and flight crews, good gate folk on both airlines as a rule, complimentary networks, complimentary fleet structure, complimentary clubs, etc etc etc

Pretty sure, based on my experiences with Admiral's Clubs, they have the T-Mobile option as well.

Great move for Delta though. BOS has been doing this for a while now (since March or so), great to see the rest of the system follow through. Makes my membership worth a lot more now; free booze, free internet, comfortable places to wait, and locations at nearly every airport I go to (the only two airports I go to regularly without a Crown Room are MHT, which has an airport-run lounge that I can use with free softdrinks, etc., and they have free wi-fi in the entire terminal; and GSO, which Wake Forest has negotiated some sort of contract with the airport to let those with Wake Forest-issued computers free access to the airport wireless network, so now I can get online nearly everywhere I travel in the country).

Actually that is NOT true. I am an Admirals Clubg member and I know AA does not offer free wi-fi in it's domestic lounges. See below - T-Mobile is offered.

Considering how low cost it is to provide access, it's just currently due to the T-Mobile contract, and DL is likely paying T-Mobile each time it does this.

Talk about a greedy decision coming back to bite you in the ass.

Yes, but it is considered a "one use pass" and last time I checked, if you buy a one use pass/one day pass, you are a MEMBER for that day. It is not a courtesy entry like it is for Business Class pax.

You are paying (through Amex paying, which you pay for with the large annual fee), and should receive the benefits of membership for the time you are there.

Call me stupid. Call me a dumb gate agent. Call me whatever. FLAME ME for all I care.

BUT....the company you work for is paying the airfare and rarely its not you. So, get over the $10.00 fee. Cheap a$$es.
I know, I know....you think that I've missed the point.

Everyone says NW is cheap, but anyone that goes into the Worldclub each day gets free Wi-fi.

Like Davescj said, the Platinum AMEX card holders are allowed access to the DL/NW/CO clubs, but are not members. Like said earlier, this is surely a temporary solution - DL will surely yank the T-Mobile service and provide their own totally free service for all people in the club. The T-Mobile day pass hand out is really a pain in the butt for the CRC staff, so DL will surely realize this and soon be on par with the CO and NW clubs. But, the infrastructure is in place for all clubs and this will provide the service immediately. Lastly, DL doesn't want to make any decision that will complicate the labor/staffing responsibilities for the CRC (or any airport) operation, they are all about streamlining and simplification right now, so what I am trying to say is that all signs point to thi sbeing a stopgap.

The T-Mobile service was a great idea a while ago, but now, technologically, it is inferior. Especially that some airports may have airport free wireless - and there is this revenue T-mobile service available.

I would actually like the whole topic to go the way of airport available freely wireless at all airports, then the clubs don't have to do anything. This is a possiblity domestically, but a reach internationally for the forseeable future.
