DL/AA In Preliminary Talks With Boeing On 787

Mon Jun 18, 2007 1:58 am

Forbes reports that DL/AA are in preliminary talks. I guess so much for the AA mega order and the 30 787's for Delta rumors.

AA maybe getting an idea of what kind of deal they can get, but will not place any order till AFTER agreements have been reached with the APA at least. More likely BOTH APA and APFA. So....2009 at the earliest.

The Forbes article quotes Scott Carson President of commercial Aviation for Boeing as saying"already a renewal of interest from North American.airlines like air Canada and Continental already opting for the 787 . I'm sure the folks at Northwest Headquarters were glad to see the high regard Boeing had for them.

Management could always say, "Sorry, we can't give you a raise. We spent on the money on the new planes that you have been saying that we need."

Am I the only one who think 30 787's for Delta is far too little?

Yes, it was very few orders from DL. I think DL need boost more equipment 100x 787 or below. I thinkable DL will even bring more 787-9 or 9. It would enough more capacity growth from DL.

We must remember that AA is in the market for a replacement for its aging MD 80 fleet and I would suppose DL would also be in that same camp.

They will likely be used as a negotiating tool..

right now no
in 5 years maybe
the first 30-50 787s are for expansion ONLY
then there comes a early 767-300ER and 767-300D replacement
DL wants to put crew-rest(the crew beds for 12 hour or more flying) and lie flats on there 767s by 2010 so they first 787s will be for LAX and ATL to Asia

I agree with above posts ref AA: they need to resolve labor issues before they buy planes. If they go into the bargaining pleading money woes, after having bought planes, they'd never get out again.

With DL, it is true they both need to expand and update. DL has traditionally been a Boeing customer (as has AA largely), but before they go buying planes, the finacials need to be in order. And, if rumors are true, a new CEO is in the wings, that will need to happen first.
Can I have a mojito on this flight?

You have to start somewhere. Besides, all those 787s need to be financed as well. For all we know, it could be 30 firm 150 options or such.

Not soon, the MD-88s will be to DL what the DC-9 is to NW  Wink .

does that mean we will have to hear all those stupid original statements like, "when DL retitres the 777 or 787, the crew will fly home on MD-88?

Nah, it will be to the tune of "When DL retires the 737RS..."  Silly .
But seriously, it won't be that bad, though with the average A.netter, you never know...

What do you mean? Surely they would charter a NW DC-9

DL, AA, CO, UA, and probably one of the low cost carriers will all be players for the 787 over the next couple of years.

The real question is when.

If these newer airplanes are easier to fly should not the airlines match the reduced workload with reduced pay?

NWA ordered 787's a long time ago so it isn't just Air Canada and Continental in North America to have ordered. Northwest will be the first carrier in North America to get them. How could the president of boeing commercial forget that?

I wonder if AirTran would ever get anything bigger than the 737-700?
That is a good point.

How would the AA livery look on an all-composite aircraft like a 787? Would they paint it white, or some kind of metallic paint (which would look real ugly)?

Probably similiar to the way AA's colors look on their A300s.

An A300's skin is still primarily made out of metal, though. I can't imagine AA using the paint they used on the A300's tail/nose/wing sections on the whole plane.
