Whose The Guy Behind The Name On UA747

Mon Jun 18, 2007 6:00 am

I was just looking at some updated pictures on A.Net and noticed a 747 at MEL, sporting the new livery and named Bob Sampson. Can I anybody tell me who this guy is, what the story is here?

Many thanks.

Hi, he was an attourney at UA. He then become a vice president and eventually special assistant to the company's chairman.

Sadly he died a while back, the Aircraft was named in his honour....

I've heard the names of long tenured staff who have passed on are painted on some of their fleet. An aquaintence of mine believes her father's name may be one such name, (he had a long career with them) but has always been unsure as to how to find out.

I've always wished I could help her find the right connections. *hint*

UA also used to give customers who had accrued a MileagePlus mileage that was too big to redeem, the possibility to exchange it for their name on an aircraft.

B772ER N771UA used to be named "Frank Griffith Customer" in the nineties for example. I think that the contract of naming lasted only for a certain amount of years, probably 5, because on newer pics you can't see the name anymore, even with the old livery still on the plane:
