BA Airbus A380 With New Olympic Logo

Tue Jun 19, 2007 7:01 am

On a lighter topic, Brian Macdonald made a BA 380 with the old Olympic Logo afew yrs ago. I mailed him & he was so friendly to spend time in giving it an upgrade with the new logo:

click to enlarge http://www.cardatabase.net/modifieda...earch/photo_search.php?id=00008640

& the old one: http://www.cardatabase.net/modifieda...inerphotos/photos/big/00005513.jpg

Both excellent artist impressions IMO.

BA will make a choice between A388 and BA748i later this yr.

IMO a B747-8i order is unlikely at this moment because dozens of 747-400 will remain in the fleet for yrs to come.

Maybe the 747-8i will have a better chance when BA are going to replace the rest of the 747-400 fleet.

I tend to think the opposite, in that 747-8Is will be available sooner and it gives BA the time to see if EK, SQ, and QF mauling each other on the "Kangaroo Route" makes it worth sticking around (especially with their own A388s to add more scars) as well as work with their passenger base to see how they feel about reducing daily frequencies to airports like JFK. They will also need to perform long-term fleet planning to airports now taking 744 service that will not be able to take A388 service.

Mind you, I do believe the A388 has a home with BA and will look sharp in colors other then London 2012 (sorry, but speaking as a half-arsed graphic designer, that logo is hideous static and even worse animated).

Interesting that you as an American flag flyer spell ass the British way, arse. Are you in fact a closet Anglophile or indeed British?

Agreed about the logo though, looks very half-arsed and inarticulate. Branding devices, icons and logos etc, to my way off thinking, should always convey and articulate, however this doesn't say much to me at all.

I agree, there was no effort put into that logo. And its ugly & pointless! I wouldn't put it on any airplane until the British 2012 Olympic Committee comes up with a better logo that reflects the nation of Britian, as a whole, with respect!.

I may be on my own with this viewpoint... :S

But! I personally love the logo... I challenge anyone to walk into Topman tomorrow and tell me the logo design ISN'T up-to-date and very, very "now".

You may think it's very "now" now, but by the time 2012 rolls around it will be very "then".

The best thing I can say about it, is that in an abstract way it looks like a Japanese Kanji character or perhaps old Chinese - may have been better suited (with a date change) for the Beijing Olympics.

It took me a while to figure out that the plane was sporting the logo for London 2012 and not Beijing 2008.

The new Olympics logo is awful and so typical of many things these days. It is confusing, not attractive and does not reflect at all the great heritage of the host country it is supposed to represent. What a disaster. The sooner it is replaced the better.

It reminds me of when BA went with the world tails, and wound up with a backlash against them because they had taken the British flag away. Many people didn't even know what airline the airplanes belonged to, including air traffic controllers. Although I really like the result of keeping what they have now. It is really beautiful, especially on the 747s. Too bad they couldn't have something similar with the Olympics. A simple, clean design that makes a strong statement. What were they thinking?

Exactly, some idiot paid thousands to come up with this rubbish that a school kid coul dhave done better. Actually the BBC invited children to do their own design when the news broke and people were saying how bad it was and the ones that were sent in were 100% better!!!

Me too. I thought it reflected BA's world positioning very well. Very British and yet a global player. Thatcher be damned!

Good old Maggie LOL.....she was very popular on Sunday when the troops had their 25th Falklands anniversary. If we had have had a labour government then they might have not stayed British. I didnt like the World Tails except for the one which survived ''Nelsons flag''.

Given Blair's love of military action, I think the opposite is true - that not only would the Falklands have stayed British but we'd be knee deep in an Argentinian occupation and, no doubt, insurgency.

I liked the World Tails at the time but looking back, it seems like madness, given that BA really trade on that foreign impression of "Britishness". The Yanks hated the World Tails and were starting to abandon the airline. It wasn't Thatch who determined the falling load factors. At the time I thought the incident at the trade show where she covered the model 747 tail with a hankie was yet another example of a crazy old fascist, now I think she was probably right - just as at the time I decried her leadership at the time, I look back and no matter how bad Thatch was in most ways, (a) she didn't tell a lie (b) she never got us into a war we couldn't win.

Never really thought about it in those terms before - I just liked seeing differant tails on the planes when I went to the airport but if it was costing the airline money then they had to go!

That might be a bit harsh. Clearly some effort was put in - just not very much, by a person with little talent.  Wink

No she didn't; they'd been getting a slating in the press and were hugely hated by the public well before Mrs. Thatcher covered one up with a handkerchief. But good for her - she did what many people felt like doing...and it was very funny.

Agreed! The old logo which had the Olympic rings under London along with the banner going through the London name had style, class, and was simple, yet powerful. I think the new logo is absolutely terrible

By then the logo won't matter anyway... well not if you live in South America.  Smile

Sorry, but the logo that is being portrayed for London in 2012, is vulger and in very poor taste. Honestly I cannot remember the color hot pink being anywhere in the Olympic flag.

Local councils all over London spend millions of £'s scrubbing graffitti of walls, buses, trains etc & now they choose a graffitti logo.

IT'S NOT A GRAFFITTI LOGO!!! You have only seen a very small number of ways that the logo can be used. Believe me, you'll grow to love it over time. A lot of research went into redefining the 2012 brand and the emblem is part of a much bigger package, which I think is incredibly inspiring. Why not trust the people behind it and the endorsement from the International Olympic Committee and LOCOG's sponsor(s)...

It is awful, the most un-popular marketing strategy in British advertising history apparently. To think the re-design cost £400,000 when children made a better one!
