What Happen To Delta On IND-SLC?

Tue Jun 19, 2007 7:15 am

I was wonder what happened to Delta service between IND-SLC? They stop using that route last year in spring for appear no reason? many people in Indiana was upset about it because it is very popular route on Delta between IND-SLC. They gave no reason for cut that route. Many people want that route back. Plus I looked up on delta site and the seats always full or 3/4 full. I would like to know the reason for cut that route and wonder if they will bring it back since it is very profit route.

Probably the biggest factor is that DL had bigger fish to fry on routes operated by Shuttle America, but also the yields on this flight were lower since it faces stiff WN competition via STL & MDW. My thoughts are that once DL gets enough mainline a/c available, this is one they just might bring back given the success of BNA and CMH. But also keep in mind that IND is only about a 2 hour drive from CVG which has plenty of SLC flights.

SW before flew btwn IND-STL, they dropped it in mid 1990s. We were very sad to see it. Now we only offere AA eagle on IND-STL. My dad was in SLC last Aug for convention there. I was planning on going there with my parents. I was looking forward on that route then in Spring they just cancelled that route. That disappointment me. I ended up flew on Frontier airlines. They are nice company, I enjoy watch the flight info on tv screen. I enjoyed it every moments from taking off to landing. Service was nice and they offered small snack on flight from IND-DEN (grandola bar) and from DEN-IND (potato chip). My flight was full both ways. I would like to try on Delta airlines btwn IND-SLC if they every bring it back.

And you're rude.

DL doesn't seem interested in bringing back SLC-IND, IMHO. Like mentioned before, it's rather easy to fly SLC-CVG-IND. DL has the aircraft to reopen the route, a OO CRJ-700 would be perfect, or maybe a CRJ-900, but they haven't restarted it. Maybe next summer.

My uncle is deaf and has perfect 'keyboard grammar...'

But anyway, I was under the impression that when most of S5's Embraers were shuttled to ATL (hee hee hee), DL did not have the planes for the SLC-IND route, and it wasn't enough of a money maker to warrant a rush to find a plane for the route. However, I had heard that the CRJ-900 would eventually be put back on the route - but that hasn't happened yet, and OO has plenty of -900s. I must've heard wrong.

That raises the question, though, what is DL doing to compensate for the recent loss of all their 737-200/300s?

The IND-SLC route was used by ERJ-170. Most of seats on that route were always sold probably either sold out or 3/4 booked. I am sure a lot of people on IND would love to see that route back with either CRJ 700 or CRJ 900 series. But I am wonder if those aircrafts have enough miles to do the route btwn IND-SLC? Many people who want to go to west coast would prefer connect to some hub on west rather than connect on east coast to go to west coast (waste of time). Eespecially for people who want to go to either Portland, OR or SEA or some cities on west coast.

I thought the IND-SLC was flight was because S5 has base there.

S5 had a base in SLC, but they are now strictly an ATL based operation. Many of the EMB-170s S5 uses are now replacing the routes the 732s and 733s used to cover. SLC has seen more CRJ-700/900s to cover the a/c lost last fall when these planes were pulled from the DL fleet.

OO uses CRJ-700/900s on SLC-YYZ and have also used it on SLC-PIT (upgraded recently to an MD-90), so this could easily do SLC-IND or SLC-MKE or even SLC-GRR.

checkmark  VERY WELL PUT! I'm certain the DL network planning people have looked at most places west of CVG (like the above three airports) to keep them from the back-tracking issue. It has worked well for SLC-DSM for example.

Just throwing my $0.02 in...I had also heard that the reason IND-SLC was cut was due to lack of a/c.

My personal reason for wishing for this route to come back is that a same-day boarding pass counts as a lift ticket at some of the SLC-area ski resorts. I plan to ski near SLC, RNO, or YVR this winter. It would be important to me to get to SLC as early in the day as possible, to maximize free skiing time.

Now, given that I live about an hour Northwest of IND, driving to CVG is a 3-hour affair for me...farther actually than MDW. I'd rather fly non-stop from IND. So if any DL execs are reading this...please bring back this route!

SLC has good connecting flights to RNO and YVR. While Tahoe and Whistler might be more party friendly with more lax' liquor laws, SLC is VERY close to Park City.

I did this last season, CMH-SLC non-stop, flight was longer then planned because of 100kt average headwinds. We were still on the slopes at Deer Valley before noon, for FREE. That quick start program is nice.

Also scheduled on the now MD-90 CMH-SLC in Oct connecting to LAS.

I think he meant S5 had a crew base in IND. Crew bases are IND/CMH/ORD and next month add ATL to the list. All of S5's flights are not out of ATL. They also offer flights out of CVG/JFK/LGA.

S5 is actually based out of IND. They are focusing more of their operation now for DL back east out of ATL, JFK, LGW and to some extent CVG to cover DL pulling the 732s and 733s out of mainline service last fall. There are many speculating that OO will introduce the EMB-170/175 to service out of SLC to cover DL route development for trans-con flights in the near future.

Since I am a Purdue student, I find that IND is the easiest airport to use, both due to its quick (1 hour, no traffic) drive and hassle-free "smaller airport" feel. Chicago airports are usually a mess with traffic, and I have started to avoid them at all costs, especially ORD which be a VERY long drive with traffic.

wow, sound like some of you guys are familiar with IND, I am currently live in Indy, I would always drive by IND every day on way and would try to see the airplanes or etc. I always get a good view of terminal A which is full of NW. I remember one day last fall or this spring, not sure. I saw Continental boeing 757 park on gate C9 or C10. I was surprised to see due that continental never send 757 to IND. It must be last minute upgrade.

I remember that probably mid 1990s to early 2000s, UA would send their big airplanes to IND with either 757 or 767 during summer schedule but that change after 9/11.

LGW? I assume you mean LGA?

When my girlfriend was at Purdue the past few years I consistently used IND every single time. There's no way I would have considered MDW as an option regardless of the price difference. When I was an undergrad at Valpo years ago, I usually chose SBN, but if fares/schedules became an object ORD/MDW tied as my 2nd choice from up in VPZ. There's just no convenient way to get to MDW if you ask me though.

A CRJ-900 could make IND-SLC without any sweat whatsoever considering it was making it all the way from PIT. Could a CRJ-700 make this run though without taking penalties? We know IND definitely has the runway for whatever is needed regardless of temps, and is relatively low elevation. Could a hot day in SLC be a limiting factor to a CR7? DL has alot more CR7's to choose from than CR9's in their fleet which might make it a better option

The only problem with a CRJ-700/900 out of SLC is the comfort factor. IND is about a 3.5 hour flight to/from SLC. S5 had it right with the EMB-170 for a market development flight that load wise was quite successful. Once DL gets more 738s and 737NGs in their fleet, such equipment on a renewal of such a flight wouldn't surprise me.

No sweat. Although that would be one hell of a range for an E-170, haha. Continental would be ordering them for EWR-Europe I'm sure.  duck
