Detailed Boeing 787 Flight Display Pictures

Wed Jun 20, 2007 2:30 am

Good Afternoon,

As I've suggested before, I was working on some exciting new multimedia features at Flightblogger. I am very pleased to tell you that they are now completed and available at my site. I've created a series of four high resolution, highly accurate, flight deck renderings illustrating the glass cockpit features on the 787. This is another Flightblogger exclusive; detailed images of the 787's Rockwell Collins displays are not available anywhere else in the world. You will really be able to tell where the commonality between the 777 and 787 lies. However, you'll also be able to see very clearly how they are different. Each of the four shots is to scale on a 12.1x9 inch display.

In case you are curious, all images are centered around the airspace near Boeing Field.

They are available here:
http://flightblogger.blogspot.com

These should give some sense of the amount of information that is readily available to the flight deck crew. New features like soft keys, border information, topographical terrain avoidance maps and vertical path information are all accurately rendered with the best available aeronautical and technical information.

Also, not to worry, I will have all the new factory floor pictures pooled on my site by tonight. There are LOTS of new ones.

Onward,

IAD787

So, these are simulated screens of the 787 avionics?

Your title is misleading, I was hoping to see a flight deck.

Those are nice pictures, but so far it looks to me like Gulfstream is going to continue to reign with the best and most advanced flightdeck of any aircraft being built today. The PlaneView cockpit architecture, HUD, and Gulfstream EVS (Enhanced Vision System)...will the 787 be able to top that? Will it have an EVS system?

Out of curiosity, how did you arrive at the images of the factory and progress of the 787? It seems like quite a feat that you were able to get this information!

Talking to people on the program who generously provide the information. Pictures mostly float out into the community and I just act as a messenger. Also, tons of information through Google.

As an aside, since I won't be able to cover the roll out in person on July 8. I'm going to come up with some creative way of covering it - at least electronically. I'm open to any and all suggestions. Any ideas?

I hope Boeing have decided on a tan flight deck as opposed to the rumoured grey - why break a 27 year habit?

Why not? I always found grey at the 747 classics more elegant then this ugly yellow on the 767,757,777,744. I really hope they make it grey it just looks more modern. Never did understand why they changed it and now changed back.

Btw this pictures are very cool and so sharp.

That's been an on-and-off-again habit over the years...

Took over and went with the grey on the 717. 737's always had em, and Boeing kept it in the Next Generation.

They were gray for the 747-300 (Launched 1980) and Tan for the 767 line (Launched in 1978) and later 777 and 747-400.

There doesn't seem to be a solid pattern. I think the tan's gotta go!

Was looking in 787 cockpit and to my surprise I saw a stick the flight crew will use instead of the "steering wheel"....

Did I really see that in 787 or was I dreaming, if true why not on the side in c/p?

ND and PFD almost identical to B777 and B744 with the exception of the vertical profile/terrain obstacle display, this is good as the current system works very well. FMC display looks very different though, this is also good as the current system is hamstrung by its age and inflexibility.

So where are the "ultra detailed flight deck pictures"?

All I see are four rendered images of the instruments.

Bit misleading title.

I'm so sorry to disappoint. I didn't feel the title was misleading. With glass panels that big, you're getting a view of a VERY significant part of the flight deck. But nitpicking aside, thanks for looking. A lot of work went into them.

Also, there are tons of new photos from Mike Bair's presentation today now on my site for you to enjoy. It gives a good visual sense of where progress is on the assembly floor.

By the way, this is a great shot showing just how large the windows are going to be, contrary to the earlier grumblings...Look at how much room the guys with their heads through the windows have above and below them:

IAD; once again great work. The more I look at this bird the more impressed I am with its scale and looks. The nose is great looking and the landing gear seems really large; almost 777 scale. Having seen this it makes a lot of sense to me just how good the 7810 and up models could be.

Can't believe its only a few days away from roll out. I love the progress shots that they are showing; it helps to keep the FUD rumors at bay.

Actually the title is very misleading. "Pictures" mean, to me, photos from a camera of some type. These should be called renderings and stated as such in the title.

I'm not sure I'd call it nit-picking when I have spent a lot of time on Boeing flight decks over my nearly ten year career in the air. I know what the instruments look like and, while I do realize these are spirited renderings, they do not look realistic. Some are more realistic than others, but largely they look like the instrumentation from my flight sim, not to impune his hard work of course. He put a lot of work into making them accurate in detail. I don't want to take that away. But, information, even when so graciously given, can be purposely misleading so as to not leak new technologies to the public before they are ready to. Just a thought there. I was part of a flight attendant contingent that helped to develope the new galley configuration on FL's 737-700NG's and I didn't know what the final version was going to be until we saw the first one show up. I'm not trying to stir the pot, but I'd much rather see the real deal than speculative renderings.

Damn straight! I was impressed by the renderings - and the site as a whole continues to impress on a daily basis.

Sadly, it's easier to knock someone else's hard work than to raise oneself to that level.

Well, to me "pictures" is a rather generic term and "photos" is a specific type of picture. The title of the thread included the word "picture" not photo. Seems pretty clear to me.

And what 10 years on a flight deck has to do with understanding the difference between a picture and a photo is beyond me.

Does anyone know if the final 787 flight deck will be in the black and grey color that all of the existing photos seem to show?? I love the look of the cockpit with the big glass flight displays (though it looks a little empty without some of the more traditional dial displays), but I was kind of hoping to see a contiuation of the beige/tan cockpit color that's been a Boeing hallmark on the 767, 747, and 777. Anybody know any details?? I doubt Boeing will offer various cockpit colors, so is the black/grey here to stay?
