First 787 On Prod Line

Wed Jun 20, 2007 7:53 am

Had the pleasure of taking the Boeing tour today (first time in about 20 years!) and was thrilled to see the world's first Dreamliner on the production line. From our vantage point it looks to be about 1/2 complete. The fuselage from wing position forward was in place - wings and aft are not yet attached. At this stage the composite materials look more like cardboard when compared to the "green" planes on the 777 line.

I guess I never noticed from all of the renderings the missing side windows in the cockpit as there are only 4 windows compared with 6 in most Boeing a/c.

Also, in the nifty new tour center they have alot of 787 "stuff" including a partial cabin mock up - very cool!

In speaking to the tour guide I asked when they would announce a 2nd production line. She said they are awaiting info on a military tanker contract that would fill the 767 line and if they did not get the biz they would hopefully turn the 767 line into a 2nd 787 line....all conjecture of course.

Across the viewing plattform was the 777 line with 6 frames in various forms including another AC, a Jet Airways and an Air India (2 Air Indias were on the delivery line.) Jet had their F/C pods on the floor ready to install - very cool.

Also got to see an AC 777 take off - not sure if it was on delivery or within its 12 hours of test flights...still cool to see a brand new bird take flight.

This is my first post to a.net so my apologies if this topic has been covered...last post I saw was from about a month ago.

I heard something fly over, so now I know what it was.  Smile

And IAD787 has been keeping a fantastic running commentary on this site about LN 1's coming together.

Well structurally the aircraft is almost done. Internally I think is another story with a lot of wiring and systems installation that have to be completed.
That which does not kill me makes me stronger.

And from the vantage point of the factory floor, everything by the nacelles, main landing gear, and wing trailing edge is attached  Smile Sounds more like about 85% complete to me!

Yep, just check his website, and you'll see that there is a lot more attached than may appear! (Better be, because they've only got a few days left to get that baby over to the paint hangar!)

Yep - just found his website...very cool and much more detail that I was (not) able to see. Unfortunately the bird is still at the 1st position on the floor and the obs deck for visitors is more in line with the 4th position so we could only see so much. It was killing me to be so close yet so far....

I did love walking through the cabin mockup. the overhead bins were truly amazing - very low profile and HUGE when opened!

Could you explane what you mean, "12 hours of test fights"?

According to our tour guide all a/c under go a series of tests prior to delivery. First test is a brake test on the runway - they power down the runway to landing speed then throw on the brakes.

After that they do 2 - 3 flights for a total of about 12 hours of total test flight time before they turn over the a/c to their new proud owners

Thanks for the info. The company I worked for did the same, two to three flight tests before delivery, but they were closer to 6 hours total.
