Why No In-flight Map On AC Avod?

Wed Jun 20, 2007 9:43 am

I won't make this thread about Air Canada and the XM a/c or the new 77Ws, I have had opportunity to fly both recently and they are truly excellent.

The AVOD system was very good, lots of variety, great picture, an excelent product.

My question is, why is there no in flight map feature? AA, for example, has offered a detailed in-flight map feature as part of its in-seat interactive entertainment system on the aging 772s for a long, long time.

It just seems somewhat strange that with a new and very much improved product, particularly with the in-seat AVOD, that AC does not have the in-flight map feature activated.

Can anyone explain this?

i heard that with a software update later this summer, they will infact have an inflight map. There is a button for it on there, but it gives you the all too comforting, "this feature is not available at this time".

I know that AC's AVOD system is a Thales system. Does Thales offer their own moving map program? I know that Panasonic offers the iXplor moving map program integrated into their IFE systems. Rockwell Collins offers their Airshow system with their IFE systems, however, I believe they also offer a standalone Airshow system compatible with all major systems from the big IFE manufacturers. For example, Delta's 737-800s use a Panasonic IFE system, but use the Rockwell Collins Airshow system. The 737-800s were delivered before Panasonic introduced iXplor, so they use Airshow instead.

I flew on an AC E175 and A320 last week and was disappointed that the map didn't work. It is a great system otherwise. For one thing, it actually worked the entire flight!

Yes, hopefully that is the case. Although, I have only tried the AVOD on the 77W, and while I may not have seen it, I don't think I noticed any option for in flight map feature.

Agreed, as I said above, I was very happy with the system on the 77W, save for missing the in flight map feature. Hopefully it is indeed the plan to get it activated.

One other thing I noticed by way of comparison: on AA, the in-flight entertainment system on the 772s is not activated until after take-off and, of course, it is not on demand. But that said, once they start it they seem to let it run for the duration of the flight. At least the in flight map system remains on until the ground. AC, by contrast, on the 77W shut down the entire system in the pre-approach cabin preparation. If/when they do activate the moving map feature hopefully they will leave it running as it is probably most interesting on approach and final aproach.

I also had occasion to fly an XM A320 on AC from YYZ to YOW recently, which had the Thales AVOD obviously, but it was never activated, I assume given the short duration of the flight. Does AC have a rule as to minimum flight duration before they will engage the AVOD system?

It is not activated on YYZ-YOW-YYZ due to the short sector time - and the rule basically coincides with the service level assigned to the flight. Some other non IFE sectors are Vancouver-Kelowna, and Calgary-Edmonton when operated by the Jazz CRJ705.

As suggested, the system software is coming in phases. The technical sign off on the latest version of the software, is occurring as we speak in Irvine, California. If it is successful, it will receive confidence testing on a Jazz CRJ705 next week, and if that is successful will be uploaded to the rest of the CRJ705's. Mainline aircraft will follow if all goes well. The latest version of the sofware allows for additional functionality for the safety demo, moving map, and the technical capability for pay-per-view.

I just flew on US Airways from LGW-PHL on an A330 yesterday, it had AVOD and I was shocked to see no map...I feel your pain!

This version of THALES was designed for Air Canada, and various system upgrades are being installed progressively. Moving map (Airshow), video safety demos, daily news, and games are planned to be in place through the Summer of '07.

Complementary headsets and audio/video programming are offered on flights 1 hour and over.

I find that quite strange, actually. I believe that US Airways' AVOD system is a Rockwell Collins system, and Rockwell Collins is the owner of Airshow, the one of the first moving map programs offered. I would think that all Rockwell Collins video IFE systems would include Airshow. All of Delta's aircraft with the Rockwell Collins IFE feature Airshow, however, the converse isn't true. The 737-800s use feature Airshow, but use a Panasonic system. The international 767-300ERs have always featured a Panasonic system in economy, and also feature Airshow. After the IFE upgrades on the L-1011s in the early 1990s, the L-1011-500s got Airshow, while the L-1011-1s did not; I am not sure about the L-1011-250s.
