DL's JFK-SAT Route?

Wed Jun 20, 2007 10:17 pm

I was looking through some old threads, and I came across this:
DL To Start JFK-AUS/SAT With E170s (by Panamair Aug 31 2005 in Civil Aviation)

I didn't even realize DL had service from JFK-SAT in 2005. It looks like it barely lasted six months, and the JFK-AUS route went from double daily to once daily. Does anyone know why the SAT route failed? It's surprising to me that the route failed, considering they were the only ones who flew the route.

Thanks.

If they had a 'non-stop monopoly' on the route from JFK, I bet the fare was probably quite expensive and geared toward business travelers. When DL had service from LGA-ORD, the flight boarded at the Marine Air Terminal, which was convenient for business travelers (small terminal, free business lounge). They even changed the signs outside the terminal to indicate that the service to ORD departed from there.

Too bad the flight was changed to JFK.

I think B6 also started service from JFK to SAT around that same time. That why it was axed.

SAN-JFK also started and ended in mid '04-early '05 so apparently DL was doing quite a bit of "trial-and-ERROR" scheduling with their "new" JFK hub. And so, as Belizexp mentioned, was Jet Blue!

I think your answer is in there somewhere! But now that both have made some progress, who knows, maybe DL will take another run at SAT-JFK as they have with so many other former cities.

B6 doesn't fly into SAT, and I don't think they ever have in the past.

That's not JFK-SAT though.

I worked the flight to SAT at least once a week for its entire existence. The loads were always pitiful, never more than 20-30 in my experience. And 90% of the time I worked it, not one person sat in First Class. The big benefit to this flight, over the JFK-AUS leg, is that it did qualify for a meal service in First Class, where as AUS did not (based on mileage).

If anyone is interested, Shuttle America rotated two aircraft through JFK a day back then. The schedule worked as follows:

Day One
CMH-JFK
JFK-SAT
SAT-JFK
JFK-AUS (overnight)

Day Two
AUS-JFK
JFK-AUS
AUS-JFK
JFK-CMH
Prepare doors for departure and cross-check.

Note that DL now offers Marine Air Terminal Service to MDW (said to be more convenient to downtown) on a bi-hourly basis on the :55 to MDW and on the :05 back. Service is, or is to become solely flown on the EMB170
