AirTran: Urgent Job Posting?

Fri Jun 22, 2007 2:52 am

OK...I applied for a job that was posted on June 1, 2007 for a part-time Customer Service Agent position at PBI, that they have listed as having an "urgent need" for. How "urgent" is the need if they haven't gotten back to me, some two weeks after I applied for the position, with even an interview offer or anything, or even a "we're sorry, but we'd rather hire Casper the Friendly Ghost than you" e-mail or snail-mail? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is a "FINE" line between eager and desperate, tread carefully. With that said I would send an email to HR if possible and ask if your information has been received and if so when the interviews are likely to be held? Be professional and casual at the same time.

SHUPirate1, I'm glad you said PBI and not FLL, because not too long ago, around 12 employees walked off the job in FLL....there was "urgent" need there for sure.

I'd shoot an email to HR, just to follow up. It could have very well became lost in the shuffle. I just learned that I was never listed in their system as an active employee even though I worked there for a year and a half. Something's fishy with that.

And if I had a penny for every time I've crossed that line (anywhere, not just here), I'd be able to stay debt-free while purchasing airTran in its entirety.

That said, there's no contact information regarding a phone number or an e-mail address to Human Resources on the airTran website, and I'm not about to go on a search-and-destroy mission to find that information out. I just think that, if you say you have an "urgent" need for a position, you'd be going all-out to find people to fill that position, and not waiting so long to kick-start the process.

Isn't it though?  Wink

My new employer actually let me know about it. They never even had a record of when I started. Thankfully I had my W-2, otherwise, I don't know what i'd do. Very strange.

They probably just hired somebody else. Most companies do not contact applicants that they're not interested in - it can open them up to various liabilities. I do some of the hiring in my department at work and the rule is never contact any applicant unless we absolutely have to. (I mean, you can't have someone come in for an interview without contacting them... but short of that, no contact.)

I understand that FLL had to outsource their ramp because they couldn't get or keep enough people on staff to run the show. As we speak BWI is 52 people under headcount, now there's an urgent need for employees.

I left FL in November of 2005. Not even six weeks later Crew Scheduling called to draft me for a trip. I said I was not available and she threatened to give me what was called an RTF (refusal to fly). I said go ahead, write me up. I said good luck with that though, my resignation was effective the week before Thanksgiving... My wife and I laughed about that for a week! They shouldn't have been calling to draft me in the first place, I was an 8 year line holder. Contractually, and we all know how that is SUPPOSED to work, they are to draft in reverse seniority order... I was number 158 of 1400+ flight attendants. Did 8/10ths of the company call in that day? Fishy indeed...

Yea I think that would qualify as an urgent need. 52...that's a ridiculous number.

Some things never change. When I went to work for EV after working for FL, similar thing happened to me as well. This was 7 years ago when this happened.

That kind of stuff really irks me. About two years back, I applied for a job with OAI (They were looking for a Stores Clerk @ ATL, didn't require previous Stores experience, but they wanted airline experience) and never heard back from them (some companies will at least send you a "thanks for your interest but....." letter). I still see an ad in the jobs section of the Sunday AJC every few months posting that same position (although now they require prior Stores experience).

How understaffed is ATL? They seem to run an ad in the AJC every few weeks looking for rampers and sometimes customer service agents.

52 agents!?

I know we were short about 50 at one point at BWI for WN. But we also had 175 flights, compare to 50-60 for FL. I know the recent pay raise for WN ramp helped out and now BWI is usually down 10-20 people max. I wonder if the pay raise took some potential FL rampers over to WN.

Why is BWI so bad for FL?
confusing use of time

No kidding...I applied for, and interviewed for, a job at Spirit back in January...didn't get hired (I received the e-mail the Friday after the interview, which was on a Monday), and they are STILL trying to fill the position...shoot, the six-month waiting moratorium is just about up, and they actually had six separate open houses this week! Alas, I don't think they'd ever hire me...they seem to want their customer service agents to be robots, rather than people, and to not help out anybody in a distressed-passenger situation, with the exception of "sorry, there's nothing we can do, try hiring the Travelocity Gnome to get you a hotel room!"...

I know we just hired 150 add'l rampers and 75 add'l agents for the summer (45 of the "agents" are actually dedicated to 'TranLand' according to the internal memo).

Not always. Sometimes postings are made just to collect applications/resumes to make EOC auditors happy.

We're understaffed with qualified rampers and the company just keeps piling on the work. This leaves the few qualified rampers to micro manage all the other rampers. So every day is full work out at a non-stop pace. Our teams often only have enough people to do one flight, at a time, let alone the 3-4 we may be required to cover in a given time frame. Sunday we my team of 3 had to cover 11 flights in 3 hours, I might add that they were all turns. A simple break of 2-3mins was treated like a 2 week vacation. Monday the weather was horrible in the evening which just snow balled everything for my team of 3 (includes me) to cover 2 CRJ spots that were every active and 1 1900D spot. All 3 want out at the same time and well, delays were taken upwards of 20mins because our staffing levels are not sufficient. Tuesday, the weather was great, but because there was a delayed CRJ flight in the 3 approved parking spot, I had the other 2 with my 2 helpers, we were very busy and could never get a flight out without having to bring one in first. That went on for 4hrs straight until we hit our dead time between banks.

To get my airline job I applied, and then had to call etc multiple times to get anywhere. It was worth it though, as I'm now working there full time.

Try giving them a call or an email, just might be worth it.

Prudent advice. I'd follow through. Now, I can't vouch for my fellow station crew members at PBI but, within our station BWI, things have moved at breakneck speed in regard to the recruiting, screening, interviewing and hiring process. Being one of our companie's busiest stations right behind ATL and MCO, we expanded our number of flights and are growing. I must admit, when it comes to recruiting and hiring, I'm not au currant. I did it over five years ago. I forget if in our applications online, is there a space for stations you'd be interested in? For example, FLL and MIA being within 2 hours of the Palm Beach area. At this time, more emphasis in the hiring may be placed on our bigger stations.

As I said, PBI has been flagged in the FL system as "urgent need"...I'd gladly work at FLL or, if I absolutely had to, MIA...
