The Most Detailed Google Earth Airport Image?!

Fri Jun 22, 2007 7:30 am

Been travelling all over tonight with Google Earth, I don't think images get much more detailed than LHR!! Now correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that a VS 744??!!

Which begs the question looking further at LHR, what's happened here? Is it the remnants of de-icing? It can't be from a wash as it's a sunny day and water would have dried quickly and no sign of the aircraft?!

Could have been a sunny winters' day? Aircraft just de-iced and pushed-back? OR maybe, washed on-stand? Having looked at the image on Google Earth, that stand is over in the British Airways West Base engineering area.

If you look North-east of that location, you'll see several more stands like that, over in East Base.

I did think that, but zoom out to 1km and there are leaves on the trees and there is no sign of a just moved (or moving!) aircraft adjacent.

Most airports are of the same quality, expect for those in the tropics, for example take a look at Singapore, not a great image. Other airports with bad images are those with pollution problems.

Those are aerial photos, not satellite ones. The VS 744 at LHR is satellite pic though, and just absolutely stunning in its detail.

Google Earth is starting to use aerial photographs, instead of satellite photographs in major urban centers, hence the greater detail. Look at the Las Vegas Strip and pasrt of KLAS for instance.

Cheers!

i have been waiting for a google earth thread, can anyone tell me what is going on at CLE?

i see some military aircraft parked around, and it appears as some of the runways are whited out, which is odd.

also it appears as there is a 747 sitting by the IX center, a rarity in CLE

Thanks for the link. This is the first time I have checked out Microsoft Virtual Earth. As I was panning around the airport, I found some pretty interesting anomalies. If you stay at that same scale and pan over towards the western Remote Gates you can at least three separate satellite images of the area. Two of the images look to be taken around the late afternoon. At the northwestern corner you can see an Aero California DC-9. If you pan towards the east, In one image you see a Varig MD 11 with a WN 737 (w/winglets) two stands to the south and a LAN 767 to the east. Other times when you pan towards the east, the LAN and Varig aircraft are missing and all you see is the Aero California A/C and the WN 737 with a baggage conveyor belt near the front right door. What is that 1R? Keep panning back and forth east-west.

If you start at the AA and CO hangars and start panning northwest towards the remote terminal, you get a different images that looks to be taken in the morning. Like around 10 or 11am. In that image, there is a DC-9 with brown and white paint (can't ID the airline as I have never seen it before), in the middle row there is a Midwest MD 80 on the south end with two World Airways MD 11's and a LAN A-340 at the north end of the middle row.

Keep panning around and you will see at least three different images taken at different times of the day. It seems like when you pan quickly, you trigger a change in what satellite image you are looking at. Pretty trippy

Yes, it does. If you notice, the scale can easily change as well. Looking at my house from virtual earth, I noticed that the pictures from the different directions are all taken at different dates. So some of the pictures are from winter, some from summer, etc.

Does SIA have more than 1 Star Alliance 747? There is one at the stand and to the right, there is one taxiing out. Probably just an overlap in the photography.

In the case of the MSN maps, how is it that they are able to shoot enough aerial photographs to make a congruent large picture of the entire area? Is it multiple photos tied together or just one with amazing resolution? It looks as though there aren't any breaks in the scenery.

Here is LAS, SFB, and PIE. I wasn't able to get a closeup of PIE. LAS is a G4 and AA MD-80 over on the mx ramp near the D Gates. SFB is G4 planes at the gate... the white one is 860GA.

Indeed, if you look at KLAS in the northwestern area of the airfield at the executive terminal, the photography is 3" resolution. Its amazing how far you can zoom in on the aircraft parked out there.

That was my first thought as well. The blue nose gave it away and then the security cars at the four points. Can someone with better eyes than me see an airstair?

I found this weird aircraft at the general aviation ramp at ABQ. It looks like a 727 with winglets.

You can see the same thing by the old BA 747 at ABQ also.

That was going to be my question for both...how do you know? Why couldn't they all be satellite? Or all aerial? There are plenty of high-resolution satellites up there...

None of the commercial satellites claim better than ... 0.7 meter resolution? Or do some claim 0.5 now?

I'm guessing the VS 747 at LHR is better than that.

Some of the images, even though the quality has been improved - I can now see my car in the parking lot behind my apartment in Toronto for instance, are not very recent. YYZ is more than 2 years old for example. I can date it by the 5 JetsGo MD-80s parked wingtip to wingtip on the FedEx ramp. That makes it April 2005.

Microsoft's virtual earth is actually much nicer, you can actually see an aerial shot at a medium altitude which makes an actual picture

In fact, there's a second A380 about 270 meters north of that one. Both aircraft are shown in excellent resolution in Google Earth.
