I wish I had a creative mind like that! And I have a hard enough time using my legit miles for legit tickets! I should have called this guy ages ago. I doubt he will ever see a day of time, however. This is America afterall.

When I worked for AA in the early 90's we had an agent get caught for a similar crime. He was fired and the Advantage department had to audit all those records and get the miles to the right people.

"The scheme went unnoticed until the airline discovered one woman's ticket bore a different name than the SkyMiles account on which it was redeemed, Mumford said. The woman, like other passengers, had been unaware of the deception, he said."

Isn't it possible to "purchase" a reward ticket for someone else?

You can *gift* award tickets to other people. But it is against the terms of every frequent flyer program to sell the tickets for a monetary consideration.

Tickets which are issued under different names are generally flagged and subjected to great scrutiny because of this - they can be, and often are, tickets which were illegally sold rather than gifted. Persons holding the tickets can be questioned as to who gifted them the tickets, their relationship to the person, etc. etc. etc. That opens the doors to discovering this sort of fraud.

Isn't that kind of like stealing BetaMax video tapes? What's the point of stealing something that is completely worthless if you ever want to use it?  duck

Funny.

I was thinking the same thing.......with FF miles (all programs, not just SkyMiles) so difficult to redeem for flights/upgrades to any city that anyone would actually want to travel to, during any period of time that most pax are interested in travelling, how did this guy utilize the millions of miles that he stole? I would give him immunity just to find out his ""trick"" in being able to use the miles for flights that third parties actually requested! Its kind of interesting that his scheme originated with dormant PanAm miles, later converted to Delta miles.

It's not that difficult at all - just book standard awards, which give you access to any seat on any flight. It's only the "saver" awards which are extremely capacity controlled. If you've got essentially unlimited free miles (just find more dormant accounts) then you've just issued yourself a license to print money by selling full-Y/full-C/full-F seats for a song.

Not too long ago, a couples of UA CSR’s in LAX was fired and escorted out of T7 via cops. They were giving upgrades to passengers who paid by cash. It’s been ongoing for quite a long time before management found out.

There was a thread a while ago similar to this, explaining how pax had had accounts cancelled after "fraudulent earning of miles", and I'm wondering; you are not allowed to use someone elses FF card to accrue miles/tier points - fact - but what happens if you type a digit wrong, or mistakenly pull your wifes/sons/daughters card out and read out the number from that; how can you prove geniune positing intent, vs malicious theft?

[I understand of course that in this Agents case, the latter WAS true!]

I remember back in the late 80's, there was an AA agent in EWR who
created a AAdvantage account with a very common name like "John Smith"
He would check the PNR's for a John Smith and attach that FF number to
that account if there wasn't one listed...to build up this phony account.
He was caught.
