EMB-120 Finally Painted Into United's New Colors

Mon Jun 25, 2007 6:12 am

Howdy all,
Just got done uploading some photos of the newest airframe to adorn the United Express new color scheme. I know a lot of people here have been wondering if it was ever going to be painted in the livery, and I actually gave up on hoping it was based on numerous reports from SkyWest that it never would happen, both due to cost and weight....I guess we can throw those words in the trash bin!

Be looking for the photos to come through the queue...should be priority!  Smile

P.S. It looks great!

Hello everyone!

Today I had the extreme pleasure of catching the a/c in Modesto! Hopefully OO will come around and incorporate the new scheme on all the EMB's. It really looks sharp!

Excellent pics Xpfg!

Oh, I like it!

I think they look amazing. They look pretty much brand new! It's amazing how much a paint job can change an aircraft:

I do believe the non-painting of the engines was pretty much due to the fact that these planes as is have some nasty CG issues at times, and this paint even weighs more than the old color UA does. Having the engines painted would have just added to the toll. Regardless, it really doesn't detract from the livery all that much!

I'm a big fan of the new UA livery, but something just doesn't look right about this plane! I really don't like the way the logo is fitting onto the tail (or not fitting, for that matter)

I thought they weren't going to repaint any in the new colors at all... In fact, I thought they were beginning to unpaint the UA colors on the OO planes so they could be more interchangeable with DL ops...

At any rate, nice to see. Hopefully next time I'm at SAN, I'll see it (or any future painted ones).

I like it!!! Looks far better on this bird than the 744..grin. Glad they did not paint the engines....stands out all the better....window cheatline works well. I, along with everyone else, had heard the rumors of no painting...going generic for interchange...dropping the 120's out of UA....etc etc....glad to see this happen.

Wow! Very nice.

I agree the tail looks a bit awkward, but the same can be said for the ERJs as well. Actually, it looks very good on the EMB ... there's just so much blue on the leading tail brace it can appear off-balance.

I'm also disappointed the engines weren't painted, for some reason it just doesn't fit the "crispness" of the new livery ... but it's understandable not only for weight purposes, but also commonality with the fleet in the event of cowl swaps, etc.

The case is likely the same for the dark radome ... the various radomes on the other regional operators is a key example of why OO kept the dark nose.

That said, I'm very impressed. Well done! OO should paint one in the new DL livery also, just for fun. Big grin

I was surprised too when she rolled up Charlie 8 at LAX last week. N293SW came out of MX hanger late last week and has been flying with the new color ever since. It look very sharp and very cool. I think OO really surprised everyone just in time for their 35th Birthday. It was longed rumor that all EMB's will be painted in OO color but I guess not in this case. Hopefully we can see more new scheme on OO EMB's.

I flew on it from MRY-LAX on 19JUN UAX5553

RE: EMB-120 Finally Painted Into United's New Colors

Tue Jun 26, 2007 2:49 am

I find that the new United and United Express liveries are for the most part an improvement from the previous ones. The one thing I don’t particularly care for is the cropped logo on the tail, which looks inconsistent from one aircraft type to another. The size of the United logo on the tail has changed drastically over the years: I find that the tail logo from two liveries ago (the one with the orange, red and blue stripes) was about the right size. The tail logo on the next livery (the one with the gray top) seemed too small while the one on the new paint scheme is way too big and doesn’t even fit! It almost looks like a mistake, as if the folks in the paint shop climbed on a ladder to paint the tail and said “oops, the logo is way too big, but so what, let’s just leave it on this way as I’m sure no one will notice”.

The cropped logo look seems like another new fad in the airline business: Mexicana’s new livery not only has a cropped logo on the tail but it is also off-center, which looks bad (and like a mistake, too!). At one time, Mexicana had one of the most interesting paint schemes in the air with a variety of colors and patterns, but now they have one of the most boring ones: Their new black and white livery is just way too plain and simple.

And now, Delta has joind the “cropped logo” club with the cropped “Citgo” logo on the tail, and a new look that’s just way too conservative, too plain and definitely boring (to my eyes at least!). In my opinion, their previous livery looked really sharp. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! Apparently, Delta has simplified their livery in order to reduce maintenance costs as it now takes one day less to paint aircraft with the new (boring!) livery. It’s kind of strange how Delta left their paint scheme virtually unchanged for about 30 years, and now, they keep changing it about once every two or three years or so.

For aircraft spotters like me, the paint schemes of airplanes is just one aspect that makes such a hobby interesting. I remember the good old days, when Braniff painted their aircraft in many different colors (and there were also special paint jobs like the Calder DC-8-62). Watching planes land and take off was lots of fun back then! Since the tragic events of September 11th, spotting planes is now apparently regarded as a suspicious activity by many of the authorities.

Being not only an aviation buff, but also a graphic design major in college, I'm also fascinated by livery design.

The simple answer is, if everyone just had a logo that vit perfectly within the boundaries of the tail area as you describe, it would be boring, design-wise. The United "tulip," as many call it, is recognized enough that they can use it on the tail in the manner they are now. Instead of being used as a tail logo in the literal sense, the cropped version is used more as "a tail design representative of the logo." ... which may not make alot of sense, but the point being that they think the logo is well-recognized enough that they can use the cropped variation and still get the message across that the airplane is UNITED (plus, the full logo, in color, appears next to the titles.

I actually like the tail logo because it creates a different visual effect on different size tails.

Not sure if you mean the engines or not, but the amount of paint used on the aircraft was reportedly 27 gallons, which would equate to about 162lbs. Whether that is right or not, I'm unsure.

A second aircraft left the paint hangars today and is now flying through the system with thew new colors as well. So we now have two EMB-120's flying around in the new colors.

The new colours look great on the Brazilia, though!

This info is inaccurate. The plane is already flying the system, and we don't paint them in PDX. It actually flew from the paint hangar today, but was from ROW and over to PSP as SKW1003. The plane overnights in MOD tonight, and is currently flying a SNA segment.  Wink

But with the closure of the DEN EMB base, more aircraft are now free to move around the system. Its ok to have a handful of aircraft dedicated to one company. It is kind of like the opposite of our CRJ situation. We have a handful of cross utilized aircraft that I see flying as UAX one day and DLC the next.
