ATS Employees Stealing Bags At PDX

Tue Jun 26, 2007 9:00 am

I work for United, and I was briefed about what happen this morning. This happened yesterday. I guess some passengers bags didn't arrive on their flight. So they proceeded into the baggage service office to fill out a PAWOB. The CSR pulls up the bag tag numbers in the computer and tells the passengers the bags were scanned in PDX 10 minutes ago. (We scan every inbound bag that comes off the flights). There have been bag thefts at PDX for a while now. It seems ever since the light rail came to the airport. So the CSR calls the airport police to file a report.

We get a call the next morning from our IAH station saying Continental brought over 6 UA PDX bags that were on their PDX-IAH red-eye flight for some reason. The airport police also found more of the missing bags on the other side of the airport. So it looks like the ATS ramp employees that work CO at night, have been picking off UA's bags from the baggage claim belt. I don't know how long this has been going on. This is how stupid they are. They leave the UA bag tag on them, and throw it on a Continental flight. So there has to be more then one involved in the crime. I hope they catch all that is involved with this.

This is why you guys warned me against working for a contractor when I asked in this thread:
Ramp Agent: Should I Work At Skywest Or US? (by San747 Feb 2 2007 in Civil Aviation)

I'm glad I quit ATS... Shoddily run at my station (ONT), and now it looks like no one is stopping ATS employees at PDX from pilfering bags? Jesus...

The ATS people that work our Skyway flights in STL are just horrible. They've haven't stole bags..yet..but they sure do beat the hell out of them and our bin doors.
Good Luck to all Skyway Pilots! It's been great working with you!

I've heard that the current manager is quite anal about things. When I was there a number of years ago, it wasn't bad, but looking back with all of the experience I have now, the training was VERY lacking.

I'd call it ignorance, not maliciousness. I work the bagroom with ATS several days a week. We often get UA bags coming down our belt due to people upstairs (Huntleigh?) not paying attention or just not caring where they put the baggage. Some of the ATS bagroom employees just grab bags off the belt, toss them in their bag cart without even really looking at the tag. We have found a few of our bags in their carts even though the bag tags look nothing the same.

This is the result of one bag policy........even though in principle I support it. But I'd bet this kind of thing happens at every airport. Sad that people become thevies.
Can I have a mojito on this flight?

So were all the bags found? Was anything missing from them? If the answers are Yes and No, then it sounds more like a lazy or stupid ramp agent who didn't read the baggage tags.

Connecting an airport to public transportation does not equal crappy people; it means better accessibility to the airport for travelers.

I think it's rather ignorant to think that public transportation brings crime and ghettoness...no wonder our country is so dependent on foreign oil when our cultural attitudes degrades anyone who doesn't drive a car.

Nothing new in the industry.

I have not done it and do not condone it at all.

I have seen employees at Southwest and America West steal from bags and even steal golf clubs and cargo too.
I don't think anyone would consider Southwest employees to be ghetto.

Criminals are all over, that is why we have to have car alarms and door locks.
You are now free to be sexually harassed and then terminated for filing a complaint--Southwest Airlines to me.

I have to say that the light rail has been a great service to PDX. I take it everyday to work, and every airport bound train has at least a few travellers on it. I also take it everytime I travel. I fail to see how the light rail=baggage theft...
Where will this amount of cash take me?

There's alot more that goes on than you would expect:
-literally beating the hell out of bags out of anger or fun
-competitions to see who can break the most wheels
-going into unlocked bags
-putting random things into bags
-using bags as seats
-bag throwing competitions (distance, height etc)
-checking out golf clubs, and maybe taking a few practise swings
-fragile stickers are really a bright decoration and even an invitation for destruction

So carry all that you value most, in your carry on!

I work the early morning shift. I see first hand all the bums sleeping at the airport. The Port cops are always kicking them out. They are arriving by light rail.

Then stop them from sleeping there in the first place-I would hate to see light rail service change-it saves on parking, it is easy to use, and it provides easy access to downtown.

How do the bums have access to the luggage to cause the theft?

I wish they amended the service schedule to run the Red line all night. I'd love to use MAX to get to work, but I work early AM when it's not in service. Maybe with all the new flights being added the Port will rethink it. It's not a money issue - MAX is always a money loser. It will however be a boon to airport employees and late-night travelers.

Meh. Yes those things occasionally happen. But I don't know if it's as bad as all that. I've never seen anybody open a golf bag. Or bag-breaking or throwing competitions. I've seen LOTS of bags get broken. Mainly due to poor design or overloading. That's not our fault. The manufacturers care more about how the bag handles from the front door to the car trunk than how it handles being sorted and loaded on an aircraft for transport. Some bag designs make me shake my head, it's as if they are built to break. Then there are the passengers that stuff ridiculous amounts of crap in their baggage so the handles literally tar off due to weight, or the zippers rip apart. I'd say 99% of all bag damage is indeed accidental. On a side note, I have gone into bags to find vibrating articles. We are not supposed to loads bags that are vibrating. You can imagine the sorts of things I have found, not all of which are electric razors.

I think it's more an argument that the employees more likely to commit offenses are those who are not financially well-off enough to have their own transportation to work.

I totally agree that a lot of the time, its the bag that's a piece of crap and breaks easily, or the pax pack way too much into it. But I was taught by my co-workers early to abuse the bags in order to fit bags in stacks. We had bags known as "stuffers" which we would use to fill gaps... I'm sure you know what I'm talking about.

C'mon, lets be real here though...if you can tell me any airline that hasn't had to do that from time to time, then I have a 787 sitting around to sell you. Fact of the matter is that airlines care more about the bags just getting in the cargo bin than a bag being left behind due to a bulk-out. Its all about numbers. You simply cannot just point to contractors and say that they are to blame for everything.

I spent a little time working in ONT back in the day, can you send me an instant message on here and tell me who your three managers were while you were there?

There is a reason I used my hardside suitcase for so many years. Nothing arrived torn or broken. Saw alot of bags that were obviously just recently broken as it arrives on the carousel with a trail of wheel parts....
