15 Injured During Turbulence On SAA Flight

Tue Jun 26, 2007 3:46 pm

From Beeld newspaper, original report in Afrikaans:

15 passengers on an SAA flight from Johannesburg to New York on Sunday were injured when the plane hit severe turbulence. Some passengers had cuts and bruises and had to be treated for shock along with 3 cabin crew members.

According to Robyn Chalmers of SAA, flight SA203 hit the turbulence about 30 minutes before a scheduled landing in Dakar. The flight landed in Dakar around 04:30 local time. The aircraft, carrying 172 passengers, was checked before departing for New York around 5 hours late.

Wear your seatbelt!!!

You should always wear your seatbelt when seated, but at 30 minutes before landing, I bet there was the usual rush for the toilets (there always is!)

172 passengers isn't alot. Do they make a profit on these services?

Flights are probably operated by a A343 or do they still have 744's in the fleet?

There are still 744s but they mostly do JNB-LHR. This flight was a 343.

Thanks, yeah, then 172 passengers isn't such a bad load then.

It is to prevent things like this that LH since over a month has their seatbealt signs always ON!

This is a new policy they introduced after a couple of the same incidents like from FRA to DFW...

I would think. And the air can get choppy w/o warning.

The whole flight? At least in the States, if the light is on, you're not supposed to get up for the WC even. How do they resolve that issue? Or is the light merely to remind people to wear seatbelt when not walking about the cabin?
Can I have a mojito on this flight?

But that leads to complacency - with the pax not knowing when it's just meant to warn them to keep it fastened just in case, or if it's actually on for a very serious reason; such as a severe bout of upcoming turbulence.

This is a joke, right? Are they trying to convince people that the signs are meaningless and to ignore crew instructions, or are they handing out adult diapers?

It isn't. I flew FRA-BCN-FRA on LH at the end of May and the announcement said to keep your belt on throughout the flight (not "we suggest") and the sign stayed on.
