Ocean Air First Int'l Flight(GRU-MEX) Begin Aug 15

Wed Jun 27, 2007 12:05 am

Ocean Air, the Brazilian arm of the Synergy group, owned by German Eframovich, announced today that operations with the Boeing 767-300ER will begin on August 15 with new service between São Paulo and Mexico City.

The flight will run 5x non-stop (due to bilateral restriction as Gol/Varig keeps 7 weekly non-stop rights between Brazil and MEX airport) and 2x weekly will run to Toluca airport.

By September 7 they should also begin flights to LAD which should include a stop (not confirmed yet), that would be REC, SSA or GIG.

If the plans go right as scheduled, LOS service will commence up to the end of the year.

Nice development

Remains to be seen if and when they will get a second 767-300ER in order to launch the African routes. Rumour also has it that at least one 757-200 is planned

From what I heard, they plan to operate daily flights GRU-BSB-MAO with the B763ER, due to begin as soon as possible

Cheers

With only one frame, it will be hard to compete with AM and take the premium passengers...
I wonder which leg will be night and which will be daylight!!!

Is it possible for Varig / Gol to keep their 7x week rights GRU-MEX for a long time without actually flying the route??

Great News Felipe, Thanks!... this arm as you correctly called it, is extremely important for the development for the Synergy Group. I can only wish the best for OceanAir...

I heard that too, but in regards when Avianca ( AV ) start receiving its A-319/320 next year that might transfer one of its 757s to OceanAir...

Lovely! More competition in the route! We are now just missing either RG or G3 starting MEX, any news on this? When is RG getting its B762ER for the route? And we are also missing MX to start Brazil! I hope fares drop, can't wait to go spotting to GRU!!!!!

This is very surprising... I am glad TLC will have more international operations.

I think MEX-GRU should be red-eye and GRU-MEX should be the daylight leg.

Not for long I think. If I am not mistaken, there is a deadline by which RG must restart the authorized routes that are currently without operations... if they don't restart by then, the authorities will be lost.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

The deadline is October 2007. If RG does not resume flights to MEX by the dealine its frequencies will be taken and other airlines could apply for the frequencies.

Very good to finally have some dates for a service that has been expected for a while.
No mention of LAX, I see. Even though OceanAir has the rights, I suppose that they still want to operate it via BOG, and that is the hurdle.
I wonder if AV applying for 2 extra LAX flights a week has anything to do with this.

Will be good to see that 767 actually doing some flying!

Yes because of the Bankruptcy protection Law. They keep up to 180 days after the international authorities has been advised that they have the right to fly (on this case).

Tony, oil and also tourism. Nigeria is also buying several other kind of merchandise from Brazil and this flight can help to increase the level of trade.

Just because of the bilateral restriction Eddie. Brazil can fly up to 12x weekly flights to MEX only. 4 other flights can be done, but to other airports. Mexican carriers keep the same restriction, can fly to GRU just 12x weekly.

7X to MEX/TLC means the plane will be used more than 18 hours, daily! In my opinion very tight for a sole 763.

For instance, MX flies each 763 to EZE 18 hours as well, but only 6X weekly.

Interesting...

A second 763 should be arriving shortly, so they can even begin the flights with 2 frames. I'm trying to obtain the flight schedule.

I wonder why they're even considering split operations betwenn MEX and TLC. I'm sure some people will get confused. Why didn't they choose to fly to CUN or GDL instead of TLC?

I think Ocean Air will be considerable cheaper than Aeromexico, so don't be surprise if Ocean Air sees very high loads all year long. But yes, AM will make their money on the premium seats.

Toluca is a short drive from Mexico City, if people can save $300 USD flying to TLC instead of MEX, its not a bad deal.

I'm hoping that both Avianca and Ocean Air will tag on CUN to their Mexico City runs

Oh yes, Filipe, that's clear indeed. I just think that many O&D passengers will feel happy that the flight will be leaving from/arriving at TLC, and I celebrate that for the flyers and for TLC!

Quoting C010T3 (Reply 15):

Well, CUN is tricky because it would be a 100% leisure destination, so the yields might be too small or even non-existing. While there may be an untapped market from MTY or GDL to Brazil, I think that choosing TLC will allow OceanAir to offer -awkwardly- daily service to the inhabitants or visitors of Mexico City and its metro area, which is a sensible business proposition.

Right, business ties between Mexico and Brazil grow a lot during the past 5 years and the flights has been reduced ! There's a huge market waiting for Ocean Air ! Now the best alternative AM has to grow is really begin it's planned MEX-GIG non stop service, it's amazing how many Mexicans are connecting thru MIA and ATL to Rio.

Finally competition again on Mexico-Brazil !

How will OceanAir operate nonstop from MEX with a B767-300ER? Isn't the range of the aircraft too short for this?

No it isn't, Varig use to run this flight also with a 767-300ER during some time (when not using one of their 777-200). Even LAX-GRU is possible to run with a 767-300ER.

Varig will also be reintroducing its flights to MEX. You should definately fly in October to Brazil. You should expect a fare war, since 14 weekly flights will be started in such a short period of time. May you'll come with a blue "Seven-SIx" instead.

Yes, well, they need to consolidate MEX-GRU as an all-777-200ER route, maybe even beyond 7x weekly. And GIG needs attention from AM as you well say.

It is not only MIA/ATL-GIG... I have seen people fly from GRU to MEX via ATL with DL and via IAH with CO too. In fact, there are lots of Mexicans going to South America and South Americans going to Mexico who use U.S. carriers and fly via DFW, IAH, ATL and MIA. Mexican carriers need to do their homework and start new flights.

Even AM used its sole -300ER to GRU from time to time. Also, MX is sending 767-300ERs to EZE from MEX non-stop, which is basically as far away as GRU.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

I'm aware of this. But MEX has a much higher altitude than LAX. Much higher.

Varig I know used to operate MEX-CUN-GRU. I assume MEX-GRU would have had payload restrictions.

The point is that a non-stop flight creates demand. Imagine how many people from the rich Mexico City can travel to Brazil, how many business can begin between both countries as entrepreneurs realize there is space for cargo, for a quick travel. Imagine how many Brazilians can visit the secrets of Mexico and also marvellous beaches like Cancun. Imagine how many additional business (we already set up Boticario, Havaianas, Casa do Pao de Queijo, Spolleto, Habibs and other nice franchise in Mexico... more fligths could mean more companies looking for the ties of the two biggest markets in Latin America)

The lack of flights discourage travellers, a non-stop creates demand!
