TAM MD-11 - Seatmaps/seat Info For Business Class

Wed Jun 27, 2007 12:58 am

Does anyone have any info on the seating available on TAM's MD-11's operating MXP-GRU-MXP ? I have to travel to SAO next week, and am booked on JJ, so would appreciate any info on pitch/recline/etc, also IFE, in seat power etc ? There's nothing on Seatguru or Seatexpert, and TAM's website seems to deny the existence of M11's altogether.

Any info gratefully received, ta

Hi JGPH1A,

Well, I haven't found anything on TAM's website either. Nevertheless, all three JJ MD-11 are ex VARIG planes, hence they still carry the same seating (actually the plane is basically still the same but with a fresh coat of paint and TAM titles) and I do believe the IFE is still the same (unless they have a mobile dvd which VARIG also used to offer in Business Class). Here is a shot from the interior:

Business Class:

I already flew on that one, alas, as VARIG's PP-VQK. The business class seat was quite comfortable even though not quite what the competition is offering nowadays. The IFE was poor (if not non-existent) though. Can't remember how much the seats recline (probably something along the lines of 150° or so). The pitch was also quite good. If you like window seats, the MD-11 will be a dream come true as the windows are huge. Look for VARIG MD-11 (GE powered, not the ex SR/LX planes) reviews on seatguru and seatexpert. You might find something there.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Marcelo

Hi there,

The MD-11s TAM uses to fly that route are ex-VARIG machines and as far as I know they haven´t had them refurbished and brought up to JJ´s fleet standards.

You should then expect VARIG´s old configuration, which means old style C/C seats ( versus JJ 180o. degree recline), and no in-seat PTV (they hand out personal DVD players instead).

I think you´ll also find some additional useful information at the Skytrax website (http://www.airlinequality.com/main/forum.htm) reading some of the reviews made by fellow passengers.

Hope this helps a bit!

Cheers,

The seat layout remained the same as with Varig. In the past I found a seat map on their website but it seems to be gone. Basically there is one row of 6 First class seats. The business cabin is split up in two parts with 6 seats in each row (not sure how many rows). The economy class layout is 3-4-2. There is no personal IFE entertainment or in-seat power available. There are monitors in the aisles but I am not sure if they are used for showing some movies or not. In Business and First you however get your personal player as you can see from my trip report linked by Mario above.

I've got it! Nothing like knowing VARIG's old fleet site address by heart...

Great, that seems to be the right one... And I think it is also right that I remembered the layout in Business wrongly and it is in fact only 2-3-2...

I think is 49C (7 x 7C)... not so comfortable for a long trip.

I actually find it more comfortable than TAP's Top Executive.

Thanks everyone for your info - great trip report too, btw. But I've decided to go with AF via CDG instead, the thought of another transit through that hellhole MXP was too much ! It says a lot about an airport if a transfer through CDG is actually preferable !

Still, maybe next time on JJ, I hope.

Well, then you are comparing probably the two worst transatlantic products....

A wise choice IMHO.

TAM business class hard product on their A330 is far better than the MD11 but AF wins hands down on overall service.

Agree. Wise choice. AF business product is well above TAM.

I was just trying to say that even though the Business class in the M11 hasn't been updated for years, it beats TP's product in my opinion.
