LH To Fly FRA-EWR With BBJ Starting Next Winter

Wed Jun 27, 2007 2:51 pm

Just checked LH's homepage and found out that LH will replace it's current MUC-EWR-MUC BBJ service with an A333 and will add an early morning FRA-EWR service with BBJ.

12345-7 LH484 FRA-EWR 08:15-11:45
12345-7 LH485 EWR-FRA 15:55-05:40+1

1234567 LH412 MUC-EWR 15:15-18:35
1234567 LH413 EWR-MUC 20:25-10:10+1

Interesting change of strategy - I am sure that it will take not much effort to make this flight profitable, since it is well connected with the first inbound wave from a large variety of domestic German destinations on the outbound sector and the first or second domestic and continental European outbound wave upon its return to FRA.

Would PrivateAir be the operator of those flights? I wonder how well the flight will do since there's already quite a number of business seats from New York to FRA with LH, CO, DL, and SQ on the route.

Very interesting!!!!! I'm surprised they're changing their MUC service, but not so surprised about the addition of an all business aircraft addition.

As far as I know is the 2nd flight FRA-EWR-FRA not doing too good... Loads arent very high in the A333 so it might be better to use the BBJ instead and use the A333 from MUC.-EWR-MUC where better loads can be expected...

Thanks. I've spoken to a guy that has flown AMS-IAH and he said the service was excellent. This is a larger market and there is more competition, but once the flight finds its niche it will be probably do fine.

Correct. Privatair would operate the flight. Apart from other flights like ZRH-EWR (if I'm not mistaken) and DUS-EWR, they also operate a second AMS-IAH flight for KL.

The early morning departure is likely a direct response to the attempts of KL/NW to set up an early morning transatlantic departure bank at AMS in order to offer overnight longhaul connecting passengers a short transit in AMS. KL/NW will be operating early morning flights to JFK, BOS and DTW next winter. In the current summer program, there is also an early morning LAX departure.

These early morning banks really make sense. There are a lot of arrivals from India, the Middle East, Africa and Russia between 5 and 6:30. The first flights to North America rarely start before 10. So there is often a waiting time of around 4 hours involved. With more and more Middle east and Indian carriers flying nonstop to North America with shorter connection times the European one have to react.
I wish LH would have at least a 8 o'clock flight to NYC, IAD and ORD.

LH has a 9 o'clock flight to ORD. LH 434 MUC-ORD. They also have a DEN-MUC flight which doesn't leave DEN at ungodly times and makes the afternoon departure bank MUC-US. LH really is a very comfortable position with their dual-hub strategy, they're almost operating a unified hub meanwhile, with the FRA and MUC departure banks conveniently offset for the passengers, for both European and intercontinental departures

But that doesn't help people flying LH from Africa, Middle East, India and Central Asia/Russia because all these flights go to FRA. MUC is to weak to these destinations.
Where MUC is strong is Europe. But People from Europe don't need these early departures from MUC. For them the 10 or 12 o'clock bank works much more comfortable.

The only real early morning flight from FRA is so far the code share with United to Chicago at 8:25. There is also an 8:30 by SQ to JFK, but LH stopped code sharing on them a while ago.

Therefore I think LH should have flight from FRA to JFK, IAD and ORD well spread between 8am and 5pm.

This is correct, LH badly needs to improve MUC's connection to these destinations.

You turning the words in my mouth  Wink

I was asking for earlier departures from FRA to North America for better connections from the mentioned destinations.

But you could certainly also do it the other way around and improve flights from Africa , Middle East etc to MUC. But 2 or 3 more early morning flights to America from FRA might be easier to achieve than introducing two couples of new flights from MUC to the Middle East and India.

I wish they would do a morning NYC-FRA to make it easier for our employees to make early meetings in MUC.

Interesting that the GDS (Apollo at least) is not yet updated with the Privatair flight. It has been showing the retimed MUC for a couple of days.

LH is slowly expanding the MUC hub with longer haul flights. MUC is important for LH also for a lot of the connections to eastarn erurope who are feeding the long haul flights as well as the passangers from LX from all over the world. LX has a decent Africa network which feeds pax to MUC as well.
Zanair flight, please hold on finals as we have to clear rhino's off the runway. Next flight KUL-FRA-AMS Flown in A319,A

For LH, that flight is as good as them operating their own metal on the route since UA shares profits with LH on Transatlantic routes. I don't think LH could ever have a reason to compete with UA at the same time. The two airlines stagger their departure times since both earn profits from either carrier operating the route. UA and LH have one of the closest partnerships in aviation.
