WestJet Unveils Paperless Boarding Passes

Thu Jun 28, 2007 2:12 am

Interesting!

Full story: http://calsun.canoe.ca/Business/2007/06/27/4293683-sun.html

"WestJet has become the first airline in North America to implement the use of paperless boarding passes.

Instead of printing of your airline ticket off at home or a kiosk in the airport, your ticket can now be sent to you via e-mail and stored directly in your cellphone, Blackberry or PDA."

It's wonderful to see more and more airlines starting to do their part in saving the environment. I never really thought about it until I read this post, but the amount of paper that's used to print boarding passes must be astronomical! Kudos to WS on a wonderful idea!

While I agree with you that this is a great idea - they aren't the first. This has been in place in Japan for a couple of years now ...

Finnair does this for their domestic flights and it's actually a pain in the ass as it slows down boarding. Instead of the gate agent picking up your boarding pass and just scanning it, they have to take your phone / FF card / whatever and type in your details. It's not hard to work out which one is faster.

Southwest had plastic reuseable boarding card for years as well.
Can I have a mojito on this flight?

They stopped using them a few years ago.

EDIT: Duh, I read "had" as "has". Oh well.

I remember before 9-11 that Delta had a check in system using your cell phone. It was great for people who were late from a meeting and couldn't make it to the kiosk before the 30 minute cutoff. I also remember that DL technology was working on a barcode system where you could scan your phone at the gate and it would read the barcode on your browser as your boarding pass.

I think it's a bad idea. What if yout cell phone or BlackBerry, etc. runs out of battery? breaks? etc?

I always like to have a hard copy (paper copy of everything I do).

Is it just me?

There are of course contingencies in place. For instance if you doe a web check in with AC and lose your printed boarding pass there is a counter where you can get a new one. Not a big deal.

You can go either to the check in counter or the gate and get a new boarding pass that is printed out. All you need to do is show your ID, so it isn't bad at all.

This is slightly more modern than pieces of plastic.  Smile
