Wonder what Bmi would use on the route,if infact this goes ahead.
I believe an A330 would be appropriate,if they can get a spare aircraft from somewhere.
This route is very busy,and BA and El Al,use 767,777,and occasionally 747.
Will TOM be using 757,does anybody know?

- I think the TOM press release indicated the use of 757 & 737 aircraft.

I know El Al used to use a 737/8 on the STN-TLV route.

A330 would be nice, and probably needed to compete effectively. However I doubt bmi would use an A330 to Israel, when they are needed for LHR-US. Therefore they would probably used a BMed A320/1321, or one of their own A320

TOM can get away with using a smaller aircraft as a LoCo - but bmi aren't, and could find it difficult competing with BA and El Al

If the proposed routes to Egypt and Israel go ahead, expect bmi to operate the Airbus A320 family aircraft equipped with the new medium haul product to operate these routes. bmi is keen to expand into medium haul markets, one of the key reasons for buying BMED, but they do not have the widebody aircraft to put A330s into these markets, they're all going to be spared for flights to the US beginning in March. That's unless a buyer comes a'knockin' ...

BD could get away with it, if they make sure the A32S are configured in a comfortable way. Most paseengers won't really give a sh*t. It will either be brand loyalty, the best service or lowest cost.

Would these flights only be from London, or is it possible that some flights would originate from another British city, such as MAN? Also, which airport in London would BMI most likely use for these flights?

I doubt it. Now is probably your last chance to see a Long Haul A330 in BMI colours from MAN.
Ive flown BD701 loads of times and the IAD route too..

Soon as open skies hits.. BMI will be nothing more than a Middle East to US airline connecting via LHR.
Then a spin off budget enterprise on the side.
So far in 2008 45 flights and Gold already. JFK, IAD, LGA, SIN, HKG, NRT, AKL, PPT, LAX still to book ! Home Airport LCY

Which in the long run may well be their undoing. They can't be a connecting airline via LHR unless they maintain connecting flights, which they can only do if they have the slots, which they have to transfer to long haul flights if they want to operate long haul from LHR, robbing Peter to pay Paul. They are hardly stellar financial performers now given that we are at the top of the current cycle, Open Skies won't do anything to improve yields from London!

Conversely, MAN-ORD is a big earner for them and they would be fools to give it up. But if United or even LH took over that route (and Virgin took over the Caribbean leisure routes from MAN) I wouldn't be bothered at all. In fact if they did pull MAN-ORD they may as well pull MAN-LHR as well as it's a waste of slots at LHR.

Hopefully however maybe they will operate more UK routes into LHR and put bmi regional onto these services as they offer a great product and it will still provide UK domestic links and the chance for passengers from other parts of the UK to connect onto BD flights. Although, judging by most of the comments on here maybe getting more people to connect at LHR isn't such a good idea?

See my reply above. You just can't do that - using LHR slots for more 50 seat RJs is lunacy. It won't happen. And I can't see how pushing yet more traffic through overcrowded LHR can possibly be a good idea! bmi regional will be far better off concentrating on their more successful and profitable non-London routes, which is exactly what they will do.

My 2 cents / pennies / eurocents worth....

I think bmi shud develop a 2 hub approach, at LHR & MAN. This way they could feed regional traffic to unrestricted MAN, and develop it nicely, and keep LHR as their southern/european fed hub, again developing it alongside the bmed and Open Skies routes...

As for Israel, provided they make more of an effort with it than their Indian/Saudi routes, then it could/shud be a success...however my breath i won't hold...!!
flying is the safest form of transport - until humans get involved!

Would be from LHR - MAN is probably the only market outside of London that could sustain Israel service, and TOM will have that market sewn up when they start MAN-TLV in November
