Delta's New DXB Service

Thu Jun 28, 2007 11:30 am

I'm going to Dubai on Friday night from ATL and flying via LGW on DL58 then onto EK16. When I return on June 6th, I'll take DL7, the new nonstop service to ATL. A friend who is an F/A with DL checked on that return flight and said it's overbooked. I'm happy that DL chose a profitable route but find it unusual that a new route would be a) full and b) oversold.

Why would revenue mgmt overbook the flight when they have no history to know how many no shows they will have?

Has the service been heavily booked since it began in May or is this particular day a one-off? I am silver medallion and travelling with my mother who is not. If I get bumped up, do you think they will kindly move her up as well? If not, I'll be a good son and give her the seat but it would be nice to spend the 15hr flight in a comfortable seat since I am 6'2".

I tried to Non Rev on this flight the other day and could not get on as it was heavily booked, had 10 tons of cargo, and was ultimately weight restricted. I believe all revenue psgrs were accomodated but none of the 24 NRSA's. I had to fly from DXB to AMS on KL and then on to ATL. The flight from ATL was also heavily booked, only a few seats open going over. All in all, these flights are doing gangbusters. But, NRSA's beware on the return leg--have some backups planned.

I seriously doubt it. I would plan on the "good son" plan.

Do you have status with DL or a SkyTeam partner? If not, chances are elites will get any bump ups that happen.. if they happen

Nope.. they will just stamp your passport for entry when you land in DXB.

Don't entirely agree on that one, but for the most part it's true.

Every airline has no show information on every route.... some are guesses and some are more refined.

And remember that DL has served DXB before w/ one-stop service via CAI.

Revenue mgmt started to build history the day the first flight operated... and every new departure is add'l history.

..I remember back in 2001 seeing a DL tri-jet there..I had no idea at the time they were serving DXB..it was a shocker... Wow!

.that being said, I'm glad DL is ostensibly doing well on the route..hope it stays that way... Smile

I had a co-worker who also tried to non-rev on this flight and the same thing happened to her - no NRSA's were accomodated due to weight and balance and she too had to come home through AMS.

Actually, you do need a visa to get into DXB. You can get it in country, though. If I remember correctly it is $28 if you purchase at the airport.

Negative. There is no charge for US citizens visiting the country for less than 60 days. No special arrangement is needed to obtain an entry Visa as it is stamped in your passport at the DXB immigration desk. I was cleared through immigration/customs in about 5 minutes. Very simple, hassle free process.

I was looking at taking my last trip of the summer in August before I have to go back to school. I've looked at PRG, OTP, PSA, IST, etc, and all seem to be full or close to full, and that's for a flight more than a month away! So I would imagine that the flight would be doing well, although I don't know overall as I only checked a few dates.

There are questions on the entry requirements regarding a visa requirement to the UAE, the answer is it depends, apply your situation to the link below:

One of the investment houses put a note out today saying they expect DL to outperform the industry on RASM growth and that DL still has considerable upside because they are really only about half way through their int'l expansion using the converted 767s and 757s from AA/TW. Plus, DL is apparently pushing for lots of 777LRs which will increase their footprint in Asia significantly (including S. Asia).
Africa is apparently becoming a gold mine and DL intends to full develop it.

Glad to hear Delta's new international routes are performing well - and great that Delta's had such a successful expansion internationally out of JFK and ATL the past 2 years!  bigthumbsup
I can't wait to see what's in store for DL next year internationally - what about Warsaw (Poland) and maybe St. Petersburg (Russia) or even Cairo or Casablanca?

It's UK citizens that get additional "benefits" for entry into UAE, not US.

There are 33 countries that effectively do not need any sort of visa to enter. These are listed on this page:

http://guide.theemiratesnetwork.com/living/visa.php

However officially, you are correct Acey559 - a law was passed saying that entry by citizens of these countries would be through a visa on arrival with a charge of 100AED. This is NOT enforced at all though - I've been to the UAE approx. 10 times in the last 2 years and it's always just a stamp in the passport as you enter and leave. No money changes hands.

As a F/A working the ATL-DXB services for the month of June, the westbound flights have had a higher passenger load. On the three trips I worked, the Business Elite cabin was 100% on only one trip and the highest Y load was about 94%.
But in fact have found very few NRSA passengers onboard flying from DXB although have had a few flying out of ATL.
I personally have not heard about any weight restrictions flying westbound and perhaps someone from Delta should check with our handling agents in DXB.
I remember my days at TWA when agents there would deny NRSA boardings when we had seats open. Several "calls" from the States put an end to that "problem."
Hopefully I will have the pleasure of seeing some NRSA passengers in July flying from DXB to ATL.
Good luck.

I think all of those are potential Delta routes, especially if what WorldTraveler above said is true, that Delta is only halfway through with the expansion.
